April 15, 2015 at 3:12 pm #442865I saw a video where they asked “quickfire questions” to I believe one of the devs of the game. He explicitly said there is no back catalog support. So the old songs won’t import into the new game.
That doesn’t change the fact that they have the songs, already tempo mapped, with old style charts, which can be modified to the new system a lot faster than starting a chart from scratch.
It sounds to me, then, that the vast majority of songs in the GHL library will be GHTV songs. The big draw I thought was the first person view, but I would bet that it’s a much bigger headache getting those crowds to play along with a song than it would be to chart multiple instruments. I mean, I could be wrong, and the crowds/other band members don’t sync to the song and they just use the same crowd recording every time, but then what’s the point?
And GHTV is all about ‘playing along with the music video’. What about songs that don’t have music videos?
April 15, 2015 at 3:18 pm #442870Well, what I read on the various forums I was going through yesterday suggest that on-disc songs all were pre-recorded using the live crowd, with one positive video and one negative video. It’s all recorded using a pre-programmed robotic camera (“Priscilla”), so the shots match 100% from one take to the other.
So they can do live crowds for the few setlist songs, and then the rest seems like it will based on the GHTV component for DLC.
For songs with no music video, I don’t see Activision giving a shit, frankly. So no music video? No song. That would be my guess.
April 15, 2015 at 3:27 pm #442873Hmm yeah that’s kinda what I figured.
Is there any indication of how many on disc songs they will have?
I might actually pick it up just to play some songs with the music videos ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> Depending on what they have available. The first person part might be cool, but I can’t get over how goofy the other band members are. Though, they say on the site that other bands will be available not just the one in the trailer.

Haven’t seen that yet, just a few lists of the artists and songs that have been seen in the demos. I assume if they’re doing all this work per song, that it will be a limited on-disc setlist, since I can’t imagine them doing this whole recording of two takes per possible band per song for 80 songs.
April 15, 2015 at 3:42 pm #442878Now that I’ve had time to think, will GHTV require a permanent internet connection, or there will be an “offline” mode of sorts with just the on-disc songs? I ask because the (little bit of) multiplayer footage makes it look like it happens in GHTV, but if online is required that would be a huge turnoff for me.
April 15, 2015 at 4:45 pm #442885True, but the Guitar Hero series has historically had a much harder time porting songs from one game to the next than has Rock Band. I would think they would also be running into the same license expiration issues that Rock Band has. Furthermore, if they *are* using songs from previous releases, why aren’t they touting that as a big feature?
Because nobody cares, they have extensive catalogue to take their charts from, that’s it (I didn’t suggest they would do anyting like Harmonix, since songs will be free to play anyway). Licensing a music video over which you put a gameplay layer is incredibly easier to license than multitracks. Basically there is virtually no huge artist that hasn’t been in any karaoke game (U2, Madonna, Michael Jackson…), and GHTV will essentially be a karaoke game in terms of licensing.

Well, that begs the question: Do we really need stems for a good rhythm game? If HMX was trying out cost-cutting measures, that would be a big one. We know its possible to make good charts without the stems, with the notable exception of buried keys parts, which HMX isn’t going to chart anyway. If not, GHL could quickly and easily surpass RB4 with song library.

Been saying this for a while: no. 3 out of 4 C3 users either prefer that the audio does not cut out or don’t mind. It’s not a huge group but it’s still a pretty significant number. Casual gamers are probably more annoyed by how the song is not audible because of the mistake they make playing. Karaoke games have made a living out of not letting the user turn down the vocals. Personally, and I want to stress that it’s a personal position, I don’t care that much about stems in a rhythm game. Let me rephrase that: if no stems = a ton more songs, do away with stems altogether. And if no stems means the same number of songs, well, it depends on which songs we can get. Reel Big Fish multitracks vs Guns ‘N Roses with no stems? Again, I don’t need stems. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”> Heck, we could piece together a rhythm game based off YouTube if we all hadn’t a time consuming day job already. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
April 16, 2015 at 1:37 am #442926I think it looks fun.
April 16, 2015 at 2:33 am #442933Idk if any of you have seen these, but Giant Bomb has two videos of full song playthroughs without annoying commentary. Unfortunately they are a little off sync, but I just downloaded them with a third party tool and used my media player to fix that.
April 16, 2015 at 3:59 am #442944One cool thing I saw was how they mentioned the drum track gets louder when your player approaches the drummer during the song. Interesting way to take advantage of the multi tracks. I always thought RB should do something in the same vein. Like amplify your instrument when OD is deployed, or if you have a big streak. It could be optional. Seems fairly easy to implement.
April 19, 2015 at 2:27 am #443186Looks more like Tap Tap on Steroids with 1st Person Perspective. If they had wait till the VR Headsets for PS4 and whatever Microsoft comes up with for Xbox gets release, then yeah the FP view would be pretty cool to use when playing.Having the ability to play and look to the side and see M. Shadows singing or shredding along side Slash would be a cool experience. The Music Vids would be okay.Only annoying part would be to have to learn to play with the new guitars again,it’s only 3 frets but with the bottom 3 that might take some time.At least the GH and Rock Band guitars will still work with RB4.
April 19, 2015 at 7:36 pm #443220Just watched the vids. Novelty wore off after about 5 minutes for me. Also the camera effects & movements were nauseating…
April 19, 2015 at 10:02 pm #443225Wow, I think this game may be going for an E10+ rating because I just watched the press conference for the reveal and there was some terrible song edits. At 29:22, they edit the word “drugs” repeatedly. What is interesting is that they used bleeps to censor it. This makes me think that the GHTV mode will not use music stems and you will just be literally playing along to music videos. It probably makes it easier and cheaper to add tons of content (which I don’t mind actually, especially if most of it is free).
They show some expert difficulty gameplay at 24:31
(Pete Wentz was terrible at fake playing, but Gerard Way seemed to fake it better).
April 19, 2015 at 10:31 pm #443227That’s bizarre. I haven’t heard music with actual bleeps in years.
