I think it is great that Activision is going for something different than HMX (so they won’t be a competition in the all band section). Guitar Hero seems to focus on the guitar again, and they do something different with that. I am definitely going to check it out because it seems to be a totally different and new experience, even though I’m more of a drummer.
I somehow hope that HMX can bring something as new as Guitar Hero brings, it would be a shame if it’s just the same Rock Band with updated graphics.
April 14, 2015 at 8:30 pm #442783I legit laughed the entire second half of that reveal trailer. There are some interesting ideas here but the end product is a hot mess.
I felt the same way. I really felt like this was a gag. If they had released this on April 1st everyone would have thought it was a joke.

That’s the official site for the game. Honestly, I find it hilarious that they call the “Hero Button” “new and innovative” when it’s the Star Power button from GH5, just given a stupider name. There’s also the fact that they say “Why mess with perfection?” when describing the strum bar, yet the buttons were fine as-is, and they messed with that.
In other words, I myself am not looking forward to this game.
April 14, 2015 at 8:43 pm #442785In one respect I am actually thrilled that there won’t be competition from GH this generation.
On the other hand, I’m sad we won’t have cross-compatible instruments. Especially with 360 support that would’ve been nice.
April 14, 2015 at 9:54 pm #442791I’ll just go sit in a corner like a bad kitty…I’m interested in this game. Even if it’s an epic failure it’s something a bit different and unexpected. I couldn’t care less about the songs I’ve seen in previews but if it’s something new for my brain to learn I’m up for it. I want that new toy feeling again in my music games.

Except that it’s not.
They worded it a bit odd. However, they’re not calling the button itself “new and innovative,” but rather the concept of “Hero Power.”
They’re calling it Hero Power instead of Star Power since you can now choose what “power” deploys when you press the button. They didn’t go into great detail, but it doesn’t double your multiplier anymore (although I won’t doubt that they’ll add that as one of the powers).
April 15, 2015 at 12:15 am #442802Finally! A guitar game for people with only 3 fingers! (accident prone people or cartoon characters.) OK I am somewhat intrigued but not impressed. I don’t have much hope for it. If they were going to go this route then why not two rows of 4 buttons?
April 15, 2015 at 12:35 am #442811If Activision could actually get the original artist to record footage of themselves on stage at their real gigs and put it in the game that would be awesome. Seeing some “Actors” try to be rock stars just feels cheesy to me. I’m still going to get this game because I commend Freestyle Games for being different than the other developers. They should of kept drums, bass, and vocals in the game. I wonder as a guitarist if you can stage dive into the crowd? This game probably has lasting appeal of say PowerGig and Rock Revolution but we shall see.
April 15, 2015 at 12:48 am #442815I heard the phrase “expensive mobile game” thrown around. I appreciate the attempt at trying to innovate the genre. We’ll see which attempt holds up the test of time though: guitar only but different, or the same game but with less.

I can easily see DLC packs of videos of bands coming. “Be on stage with Metallica!”
April 15, 2015 at 5:05 am #442828I also got a kick out of this quote on their website when talking about Guitar Hero TV:
GHTV makes it more fun to play with your friends than ever. While one person is playing, everyone else can watch the videos.
Come on now…

Wow. I thought that was paraphrased, but it really is a verbatim quote. Mind-boggling.
They also say that ‘hundreds of videos will be available at launch’. Do they just generate the chart automatically or something? I imagine it’s probably quite a bit easier to just chart one instrument but still, that seems like a lot of songs to have at release.

They have an extensive back catalogue to use.

True, but the Guitar Hero series has historically had a much harder time porting songs from one game to the next than has Rock Band. I would think they would also be running into the same license expiration issues that Rock Band has. Furthermore, if they *are* using songs from previous releases, why aren’t they touting that as a big feature?
April 15, 2015 at 2:48 pm #442861I saw a video where they asked “quickfire questions” to I believe one of the devs of the game. He explicitly said there is no back catalog support. So the old songs won’t import into the new game.
That doesn’t change the fact that they have the songs, already tempo mapped, with old style charts, which can be modified to the new system a lot faster than starting a chart from scratch.
