November 28, 2013 at 4:52 am #409898YES!At last something of genesis!
November 28, 2013 at 6:50 am #409902Oh YES!
Great song. Would be a BLAST for a full band.
November 28, 2013 at 9:56 am #409908BTW one fun thing about Reaper, if you use the “q” key to set the beginning of the next bar, it will wipe your time signature change.
That’s what T is for…
Pro tip: RBN docs are not an optional read, you can’t do without them if you want to author songs.
November 28, 2013 at 1:23 pm #409919The song is famous, among other things, because the piano intro is in n/16 (13 and 15). Regardless of the fact that halving or doubling time signature is not that big of a deal in RB, the fact that you did the tempo map in n/8 also means, and this is relevant, that you clocked it at 160/180 BPM ca., which is not right. The intro is at about 90 BPM, the verse starts out at 65 BPM ca.
Not counting this fact, I think it syncs up pretty well, so good job on that. However, if you author famous songs (prog ones, even more), take a look at tabs just to check if what you hear is what’s going on.
November 28, 2013 at 2:27 pm #409924Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to read docs as I go. There’s just a lot of information in a lot of different places, so it’s easy to miss things. I realize it must seem annoying to people who’ve done RBN and know what they’re doing. I’m hoping to get to the point where I can contribute something back.
I’m going to have to redo the tempo map for the first minute, because of a couple of mistakes I made early on (bars 4 and 5), so I’ll fix the time signatures as I go.
One other issue I noticed is that the song audio started playing immediately instead of after the count-in. I wasn’t sure whether the playback would be delayed until the music_start event was encountered; I did double-check the MID and there is one there. I could take the WAV file and insert silence into the start of it so that it lines up, but so far every time I try to do something the hard way I find out there’s an easier way I should have followed.
Anyway my goal for tonight will be to re-do the tempo map for the first minute (and maybe somewhat beyond) and get the audio lined up.

You need to re-render your audio from Reaper including the count in, othwerwise you have no count in and the audio starts right away.
November 29, 2013 at 6:08 am #409960Had a good night. Restarted the custom from scratch. Found a drum sample for the count-in and rendered the audio, then re-did the tempo map for the piano solo with /16 time signatures. Tempo map took a lot less time the second time around too. Charted the piano solo, added a solo marker, separated it into five practice sections, added album art.
There are a couple of pretty tough intervals in this solo, e.g. in the triplet sixteenths it jumps from D to high E, a major 9th. That part of the chart is exactly what Banks plays, so I guess it’s fair to expect someone on Expert to attempt it. I do want to avoid hyper-accuracy if it makes the chart really un-fun, but for this solo I charted every pitch for now, with transpositions/wrapping to avoid excessive lane-shifting, and if something makes sense to cut later I’ll do it. There are eight lane shifts as it is, but over a 70-second solo that’s hopefully reasonable.
For anyone who wants to check it out, it’s here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/191 … rth_rb3con
I’ll be flushing out the tempo map for the rest of the song next.
November 29, 2013 at 11:25 pm #410005Wow, thanks for doing Genesis! I’ve been waiting forever for some songs of theirs to be in Rock Band. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
December 1, 2013 at 1:36 am #410039First version available here: pro keys expert only, no OD charted yet.

I’d welcome any feedback, on the part or the tempo map. I will do the other difficulties, beats, and maybe some OD after that.
If anyone wants to contribute another part, let me know which one.
December 1, 2013 at 1:50 am #410040As a general rule, if you want feedback from authors, post the Reaper project with audio files. If not, CON is fine.

December 1, 2013 at 11:50 am #410050Tempo map is very good. It’s insanely difficult for a first ever tempo map work and you did very well. There are a few spots where in game it will be a bit off, though. As a very very broad rule +/- 30 ms in tempo map precision will probably not affect gameplay except for spots with 1/16th constant hits or more. It doesn’t mean it’s ok to do a wobbly tempo map but it means that if you by mistake leave a few spots off by that much, it probably won’t hurt gameplay. However, in your tempo map you have +/-80ms spots (M134 is an example, M192 has a few of those): check the peaks in your tempo and realign those. Once you do that, the tempo map is truly solid. Very well done.
If you’re interest to do other instruments for this song, I may be able to help do some others, let me know in PM and we’ll take it from there.
December 1, 2013 at 6:18 pm #410061Thanks very much. I think I’ve smoothed both those sections out now. For some reason most of my mistakes were in the verses (I did a bunch of re-work on V1/V2 before posting)… maybe because the tempo is slow there, each measure is about 4 seconds, so any mistake sticks out more. I also am not super happy with measure 122, but due to all the chaos in that area every time I try to fix it I make it worse, so I am just going to live with it for now.
I will send you a PM.
December 1, 2013 at 7:45 pm #410068The keyboard part is very well transcribed! There are just a few things that I’d like to suggest…
From 73.1.0–76.1.0 the ascending piano notes could be charted.
And also, the flute solo from 76.1.0 to 88.5.0 would be really nice to chart on pro keys. It’s optional, but it really would be cool.
Even if you don’t chart the flute, you should at least chart the piano that doubles the flute in a few of the spots instead of the synth line. It would be more fun to play.
Again, just suggestions. You don’t have to take them if you don’t want to.
