Today during a PAX East keynote address, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos teased that the Boston area studio has “grand plans” to bring the Rock Band and Dance Central franchises to the new generation of consoles, presumably the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and potentially Wii U.He prefaced his talk this morning by saying he would not announce a Rock Band 4 or Dance Central 4. However, he stressed that both franchises are “near and dear” to Harmonix. He went on to say that the studio plans to bring these franchises to the “coming console cycle” “at some point” and with “guns blazing.”
The comments today from Rigopulos are not terribly surprising. Last summer, he said that the Rock Band franchise will return “at the right point in time.”
Nothing truly new, but still more specific than what we had before.
April 11, 2014 at 3:44 pm #417611AnonymousInteresting. Bad thing is doing customs for Xbox One/PS4 when the time comes though…
I most likely will stick to RB3 until further notice on what they do.
April 11, 2014 at 4:43 pm #417622Given that most of us here can do pretty much any song we please if we want to put the work into it, I can’t see anything that would make me want to purchase a new Rock Band game and new peripherals (most likely). And I’m a huge supporter. I spent over $3,000 on DLC, instruments and games and was in since day 1 on November 20th 2007, and again I can’t see anything that would make me want to spend money, I can’t think of any innovations that they could bring to the table.

April 11, 2014 at 4:55 pm #417627AnonymousThey could always bring more official song DLCs which will work for both the new Rock Band and RB3? I mean it is possible.
April 11, 2014 at 5:09 pm #417628They could always bring more official song DLCs which will work for both the new Rock Band and RB3? I mean it is possible.Someone has confirmed it is possible to make a single file that will work on both the XBox 360 and the XBox One and more specifically RB3 and a new Rock Band?
April 11, 2014 at 5:48 pm #417635Yes, someone from the future came back and said exactly how the hypothetical RB4 will handle files.
Here’s what you need to know based on our current understanding:
1) Can HMX make RB4 in next gen consoles read current format songs? Absolutely. We can read them on the computer, convert them from xbox to ps3 to wii to phase shift, they can too.
2) Will customs work on RB4? Not anything like what we have now, because they’re not stupid. They blocked customs with TU5, and they baked it into Blitz and the second release of RB3. Why would a new game suddenly allow them? If anything, it’ll be more difficult than it is now with TU5.
So in the unlikely event that the game turns out to be a Rock Band 4 (and not another Blitz crap), I would say expect official library support to transfer over, and do not expect customs to be usable.
But then again, what do I know
April 11, 2014 at 5:51 pm #417636Well I’m stoked, because the trend at Harmonix was definitely headed towards transitioning from plastic replicas to actual, professional quality instruments. I cannot wait to see where this goes.
I’d say there is ZERO chance of either the music library or the instruments being carried forward without some kind of premium being charged, but anything is possible.
Keeping the content Canadian since 2017!

MrPrezident: https://db.c3universe.com/songs/all/__user/MrPrezidentApril 11, 2014 at 6:35 pm #417640AnonymousI can agree that the instruments wont work (Like X360 controllers wont work for the XONE) but it is highly possible for the next Rock Band game (if there is one) will be able to read all official DLCs and releases within the previous Rock Band games like RB3 and Blitz can do.
Plus I also heard that Microsoft has plans to add a X360 emulator to the XONE, though most likely it will only work with digital versions of X360 games or only for next model of the XONE… In which case, they kinda have to make sure the X360 DLCs (FYI: The official songs on both RBN and Harmonix DLC releases list) would be able to transfer to the XONE just as well for all X360 games which can use them.
Note: I heard this from a Rock Band group that I am in on Facebook so it could be just rumors and false info, so don’t quote me on this… But I can still recommend considering this possibility.
April 11, 2014 at 7:01 pm #417641Here’s hoping to something teased at E3 about RB4 ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />
April 11, 2014 at 7:02 pm #417642To be absolutely clear, the matter of DLC transferring over is NOT going to be a hardware issue. It’s going to come down to licensing and/or expenses.
The same method that HMX uses to process the files in RB3 can be ported by them into RB4, so the files don’t need to change. Just a matter of transferring them over from one Xbox to the other or re-downloading from the store.
But as we’ve seen in the past, exporting from game to game costs money and re-licensing is involved. It will definitely cost HMX money to do it. So unless they’re charging enough of a premium that they can make back the money, it’s just not going to happen… and that’s where I think the dreams of all of those who still hope to play RB4 will die.
Really though, at this point in time, who still expects RB4, as an extension and polishing of RB3 like RB2 was to RB1? It’s not going to happen. If they ever do another band based thing it’ll be more like Band Fuse, and you tell me how much fun it’s going to be to need all real instruments and have people struggle at a party to play a real guitar, real bass, real drums, or a real keyboard, all worth hundreds of dollars each and requiring knowledge of music theory and practice.
Games like Rocksmith and BandFuse are good for those who want to learn to play an instrument for real. As a party favor? Not going to work. And that’s my only interest in the RB franchise.

April 11, 2014 at 8:02 pm #417647Both games are gonna be Free to Play FPS games with random unfitting rhythm elements sloppily thrown in, I am calling it.
April 11, 2014 at 8:23 pm #417650FPS games with random unfitting rhythm elements sloppily thrown inI thought that already had a name: Chroma.
Seriously, I can’t not like that game any more. Every time I fire up the Alpha, it doesn’t take very long before I find myself asking “what am I doing?” and close the game.
April 12, 2014 at 10:19 pm #417717I guess you cats need to l2p.
I’ve got choppy fps and random-ass freezes because of my relic of a video card that’s still not cooling and I can still pew pew baddies. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
