Hello there everyone,
I discovered C3 last month, just as I was starting to run out of official RB DLC to buy (and money to buy it with), so it was fantastic to find! I love the work that’s going on here and it’s inspired me to try my hand at my own customs, while my wife is working this weekend.
I’ve started relatively simply with Coldplay’s ‘Don’t Panic’, first track from their 2000 debut ‘Parachutes’. I have only charted Expert for now – I am intending to chart EMH soon but thought I would get some feedback first if anyone fancies giving it a go ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> I’d love to do some proper charting for C3, so I guess this is my initial audition… first time I’ve tried anything like it so I’m sure I can get better with practice…
Some notes about this custom:
GENERAL:
– I had the tempo map just about perfect (as far as I could work out), but realised when I played it that I hadn’t put a count-in at the front of the sound file, so everything was out by a couple of bars. I had to tweak the tempo map when I put it in, but I think it’s okay.
– I have tried some camera/lighting events but I don’t know how effective/proper they are!
GUITAR:
– The intro of this song is a bit weird and not quite in-time… probably could’ve given myself an easier one to start I guess… but it settles into a tempo after a couple of bars.
DRUMS:
– You might notice that the drummer is animated ‘wrongly’ – I’m aware of this! I’ve done it for my own amusement as I drum open-handed myself, so thought I would replicate that in this custom ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
– In the ‘EMH’ difficulties (which are just copies of the expert chart for now), there is a bar missing about halfway. It was fine in Magma until I made a couple of fixes, then it didn’t like them for some reason, so I just took them out.
KEYS:
– There is a prominent piano solo in the middle which I have charted – I’m sure there is some piano/keyboard buried in the mix in the verses, which I have done an approximation for that fits with the chord sequence. I know there’s a lot of debate about charting buried keys, but because there would be a keys part because of the solo anyway, I thought I would work it in to make the part a bit more interesting to play – is that okay?
VOCALS:
– I haven’t yet done a dryvox track but will do if I can find a bit of guidance on the best way to do them… I’ve scoured the RBN docs and tutorials and haven’t been able to find much on them so I’m a bit lost on it…
Anyway, enough of me rambling on – please do try it (it’s a great song anyway), I’m fairly happy with it so far, but would welcome constructive feedback to improve it! Download below… enjoy ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

Next time, select the number of measures you need to insert, then Actions > Time selection: insert space at time selection.
You get a better chance of testing from author if you provide your RPP file + audio. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>

Arm the track for recording in REAPER, record, and sing along. If your pitch isn’t good, the scoring window will be wider/easier than it ought to be, but it’s no big deal.
October 12, 2014 at 2:59 pm #430949Thank you both for the tips ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> here is a link to a folder with the con, RPP and wav files in.
Thanks so much if you take a look at them, I really appreciate it – and all the work you both do here ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

Use scrub mode to hear where they should start and end. Just from the first phrase:
Bones should end at 7.1.75
sink- should end at 7.2.87
like end at 7.4.31
stones end at 8.1.87
we’ve 8.4.50
fought 9.2.00
for 9.3.69
October 12, 2014 at 3:21 pm #430951Bass: some of these notes need to be broken up. For example, these are all 2 eighth notes rather than a sustained note:
7.3.00
8.3.00
9.3.00
10.1.00
10.2.50
11.3.00
12.3.00
13.3.00
Try using the ReaEQ plugin, and set a low pass filter to 1000 Hz. That should make the bass a bit easier to hear.

Also, using the ReaPitch plugin, transpose one octave up. After you authored like that, disable the plugin and go back to check the song in case you misheard low frequencies from strings and other instruments for bass.
October 12, 2014 at 3:36 pm #430953Pro keys:
I’d go with this progression at M7, M29 and M63:
A2 C3 E3
G2 C3 E3
A2 C3 F3
A2 C3 E3
G2 C3 E3
A2 C3 F3
Make sure there’s a 1/8th gap between chords.
October 12, 2014 at 3:37 pm #430954HARM3: just leave the “done for” on HARM2 and get rid of HARM3. Not worth marking it as 3-part for two wispy words.
October 12, 2014 at 3:52 pm #430955Guitar: I hear pretty much the same thing in the beginning repeated. My version (HARD) below the original (EXPERT):
October 12, 2014 at 4:17 pm #430957This is all brilliant help, thank you so much ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
Regarding the second half of the guitar intro, I agree that the electric guitar repeats a phrase, but I charted the acoustic guitar once it had come in. Is that sort of thing okay, or best to stick with one line while it’s still prominent?
Thanks again – I will make these changes as soon as possible ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

A way to do this without breaking a sweat is using Fix Sustains inside CAT.

Once the player locks on to something, it’s very jarring to switch. If the mix suddenly changes, sure, but otherwise, stick with one part as long as you can.

Also just to clarify since I realized it might not be 100% obvious to people just starting out, this refers to gaps between the end of a sustain and the next note, there is no limit between how close notes themselves can be to each other as long as it is physically playable by a human being
October 16, 2014 at 6:19 am #431110Great pick! I thought about doing drums for the whole album somewhere down the line, so this is like… four times better, what with all the instruments!
The only thing… I noticed there’s a few measures of drum chart missing in the middle of the song. Aside from that, thumbs up, drums look really accurate.
