Hey there,
I’m working on some songs and stumbled upon two problems.
First thing I’d like to ask is about fast guitar strumming. There are some songs that contain very fast guitar strumming (on the same note) for example most Post-Rock songs out there. I know Rock Band has this feature where you can at those parts strum the guitar very fast without having to be 100% accurate.
Unfortunately I can’t find screenshots or a video of fast guitar strumming, but here is a video with fast drumming instead (which is the same thing, just with drums):
(at minute 0:50)
So I hope you know what I mean.
Anyway, as far as I understand, you can activate those parts in Reaper with the “Strum Markers”? But how exactly do you have to do it?
I tried a few things.
Like this:
or this:
But either way I get errors in Magma:
Something like this or similar errors:
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [76] has notes outside the roll begun at 75:1:120.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Roll extends too far past last gem. Roll ends at [76]; last gem at [75].
So, how do you do this correctly?
My other question may sound a bit stupid, but since you need to add muted mp3s to the individual instrument tracks in Magma and the actual song only to the backing track (if you don’t have a Multitrack file), how to you export a muted track out of Reaper?
I tried to mute the “SONG AUDIO” track in Reaper and export it and I have tried to mute the master track and export it AND I have tried to mute the mp3 itself in Reaper and export it but nothing worked. It never exports a mute mp3 but instead exports the actualy mp3 with all the audio on. I mean, sure, I can try to do it in Logic instead because Logic actually notices when I mute a track and exports it muted, but it’s a roundabout way. So maybe I just do something wrong?
February 23, 2015 at 10:48 pm #439130You have to have a separate strum marker for each change in chord/notes, with all notes charted within the strum marker. So, you’d have one starting at the e of beat 1 of 75, one starting at 76, and one starting at 77, all with the 16th note rhythm fully charted.
Also, if you want silent tracks for your song in Magma (which i think is why you’re asking if you can export a muted audio file) you only need to right-click and select the silent audio file for each track. BUT, if you still want to export muted audio, you really just need to make another track, make sure it has nothing in it, select it, and export an audio file in REAPER using the Stems export setting.
February 23, 2015 at 11:49 pm #439132Hey, thanks! I didn’t know you can mute the tracks in Magma, that saves a lot of effort. (BTW, I still tried your method of exporting the track out of Reaper but it didn’t work, because if I select an empty track and use the export audio option it just does not export anything. But whatever, don’t need it anyway if you can mute it in Magma)
About the fast strumming, do you mean like this?
Because, if so, I still get errors that say:
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [76] has notes outside the roll begun at 75:4:420.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [77] has notes outside the roll begun at 76:4:420.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [78] has notes outside the roll begun at 77:4:420.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [79] has notes outside the roll begun at 78:4:420.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [81] has notes outside the roll begun at 80:4:420.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [82] has notes outside the roll begun at 81:4:420.
ERROR: MIDI Compiler: (PART GUITAR) Difficulty expert: Gem at [82] has notes outside the roll begun at 82:2:420.

February 24, 2015 at 1:06 am #439136No, you need one long one for each section.
One note at 75.05 that sustains to 76. Then one at 76 to x… ect
The note has to encompass the stream of notes, but can only do one “type” of note at a time.
One long note for the G’s
One long note for the GR’s
One long note for the RY’s
ect.
February 24, 2015 at 1:09 am #439138Also, leave the last note out.
February 24, 2015 at 4:18 pm #439202Also, leave the last note out.Only a true Rockbandian would offer this advice!

February 24, 2015 at 4:22 pm #439205“C3 note: People have found out that for tremolo lanes, leaving out the final note completely from the tremolo marker makes it easier to not break combo when jumping between tremolo parts.”
Taken from the C3 Docs. Not fully necessary, but it’s definitely something you should be doing. I forgot about that as I honestly have not had to use one yet ha.
February 24, 2015 at 5:09 pm #439214It’s actually kind of necessary. The last note should be either entirely or partially left out. Having it all in will very likely break the combo. Since it’s a just matter of pulling back the marker by one note, it’s not a huge deal anyway. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
February 24, 2015 at 5:11 pm #439216I think the docs say something about harmonix extending the trill not like a 64th or something over the note which dealt with that. Can’t remember.
But yeah, probably just better to always do the leave off.
February 24, 2015 at 8:42 pm #439237Okey dokey, thanks for all the advice! ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />
I got it to work now, it’s difficult for me to test if the combo breaks though, since my guitar is currently a bit broken and does not recognize up strums most of the time. Bummer.
Anyway, I can continue, so thank you everyone. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
