Hey, just want to introduce myself, I’m interested in charting a few songs — still pretty much a novice but I’ve done some messing around with Reaper and customs in the past and have started doing a few full customs.
The first one that I think is likely to be at the quality level that you guys expect is Friday I’m in Love by The Cure, which I’ll be posting (probably tomorrow morning) for you guys to take a look at and see what you think. It’s got drums/vocals/guitar/bass, EHMX, but no venue data yet.
I play drums 90% of the time so I’m definitely more familiar with those charts, but I’ve played enough guitar/bass to have a pretty good idea of what a good/fun chart looks like, and my wife sings and plays guitar/bass so I’ve got a first line of playtesting built-in.
I definitely expect vocals to require the most work, so I’m looking for feedback there. Well, along with venue since I really haven’t dug into that much yet.
Anyways, this is definitely going to be a part-time thing for me, probably will only have a song or two in the works at any given time. But if I’m going to do a song I want it to be good, no point half-assing it.
As far as songs, I’ll probably focus on 70s/80s/90s pop/rock/alt, with maybe a little bit of harder stuff in the mix. Stuff like Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, and Pearl Jam are my favorite songs to play, so probably along those lines.
Hopefully I can hit the quality bar you guys are looking for, since I’d love to contribute some songs for all the work you guys put into this. Happy to collaborate too.
For review, do you guys just want the con? The con and the rpp? Anything else?
April 27, 2013 at 10:28 am #398840Hey! First of all, welcome. I personally prefer the Reaper project because I rarely test a project in game, I prefer to check out things in Reaper so I can fix what I see right away. Very much looking forward to Friday I’m in Love. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>
April 27, 2013 at 12:44 pm #398844My recommendation for anyone looking to give us a song for review is to provide us with two archives for download: one containing a CON (so we can check the look in game, especially for venue/lip sync/whatever), and one containing the .rpp plus source audio (so we can examine particulars of the project file itself).
April 27, 2013 at 5:07 pm #398852Okay here’s the link. It’s on my own webhosting so please don’t distribute the url. Includes a con, rpp, and wav file.

Some notes:
- Like I said, vocals are the part I’m least confident in. There’s also a part at the end where he’s overlapping vocals but I charted it the way I think most people sing it (the ohhhhhh do do do do ohhhhh part).
- There are two overlapping guitars playing so I charted it with the most prominent/interesting one, for the most part, and I think it’s pretty clear. The only exception is right at the end of the solo where there’s a long held note from the solo guitar while the other roving-up-and-down guitar is pretty audible, but I thought that ending the solo with the held note was more important than diving into the other guitar. Still not sure about that decision though.
- There are a couple places in the middle (around 68.4) where the rhythm gets a little strange where I wasn’t sure if the drummer skips a hithat or not. I charted it with the hihat there.
- I did a lipsync dryvox of me just speaking the lyrics but it doesn’t look all that well lipsynced to me. Maybe there’s more of a technique to it?
- There’s no real venue or events work yet.
April 27, 2013 at 8:04 pm #398854To me it looks solid. There are issues, but nothing that can’t be fixed with not that much work…
- [*]Like I said, vocals are the part I’m least confident in. There’s also a part at the end where he’s overlapping vocals but I charted it the way I think most people sing it (the ohhhhhh do do do do ohhhhh part).
Yeah, vocals need some polishing. Here’s the issues I’ve found:
1) Hyphenation is not perfect. Not a huge issue but I would suggest using an online hyphenator for good measure (http://juiciobrennan.com/hyphenator/).
2) Harmonies are obviously missing. Those need to be added. That also takes care of the part you pointed out.
3) There’s a good amount of slides missing. Ironically, I think I may have seen a couple too many but a good amount missing. “Day” in Wednes- day (ascending) and “my” in break my heart (descending) at 23.1 and 31.1 ar good examples.
4) Syllable placement is hit and miss. On that, Nyx and espher can be more heplful but I can tell you right away that you’re authoring long consonant sounds (an example is “care” @ 42.2). In that specific instance, and in others, the note starts even before when it should AND it’s a consonant sound which should not be charted (cause it’s not picked up as it should by the game).
5) Notes length can be improved: right now some notes are a bit too long, some are a bit short.
If you want I can work on the issues you would struggle with to help you.

I haven’t looked that well at guitar but you’re not leaving the required 16th of a note space between the end of a sustain and the following note, which makes the fretboard a bit messy.

Solid chart. You’re copy/pasting too much though: you’re missing a fair amount of crash notes and I think some open hi hat notes are not there, even though you authored them. Personally I would have done the tambourine section in the middle as a steady 16th notes beat with two hands on the hi hat to accentuate the change of rhythm but that’s a matter of taste.
Also, you’re missing keys, but you already know that.
Didn’t have time to look at bass and guitar but it looks a solid custom to me. I’ve made a lot of observations on vocals but it’s probably the most difficult thing to master, your chart is actually better than most of the charts you see out there from people who are still working on their skills.
April 27, 2013 at 8:43 pm #398855Cool thanks for the feedback!
I’ll go through the vocals and keep an ear out for slides. Still not entirely sure how to author note durations, leaving out consonants, etc.
As far as harmonies, there are only a couple points in the song that have layered vocals (maybe just that end part)…is it worth authoring them? I mean, is anyone going to play the harmony part just for a little bit of singing? Or does the secondary singer just sing the main part and then split to the harmony when it appears? Either way, splitting it out kind of sucks in that a solo singer wouldn’t get to do the “do do do do” parts.
Didn’t realize there was a sustain-gap requirement, I’ll clean that up.
I’ll also do another drum pass trying to listen closely for open hi-hats.

It takes some time, yes, but fortunately it’s not difficult.

Harmonies are layed out all through the song, the “It’s Friday I’m in love” phrase has a harmony all through the song. Other than that, how you split the lead voice in those couple of spots is really up to you, obviously PART VOCALS will need to carry the single lead voice, regardless.
April 27, 2013 at 11:51 pm #398859Posting followup in the C3 Songs Playtesting forum since that seems like the proper place for it.
edit: Or maybe it should be here? Apologies mods, please put it whenever it should be. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />
April 28, 2013 at 2:19 am #398868If it’s “ready” for playtesting, you should post it there. At this point, we don’t actually have any standalone playtesters (I’ve actually only received two e-mail applications and I said I was waiting until Monday to open the gates — in a way, that tells me that 90% of the people that asked really weren’t all that committed anyway), but everyone who has access to this board also has access to that one.
Tracks posted here should likely still be in the “under construction” phase — your first or second pass of what you would consider a “final” version.
April 28, 2013 at 10:44 pm #398913Anyone working on any unreleased songs from The Bends? Tempted to start working my way through that album (though the vocals kind of terrify me)….

May 15, 2013 at 5:40 am #399651Early version of the next song I’m working on, Planet Telex from the album The Bends by Radiohead. I’m planning on (slowly) working my way through the album, or at least the songs that haven’t been released yet. I have the sheet music for the whole thing which is handy.
Anyways, this song has guitar/bass/drums/vocals, expert only right now because I’d like to get it more or less right before doing those. I did basic dryvox and practice sections too.
I’ll probably put it on the playtesting forum after I work on it a little more, but I figured I’d throw it here now in case anyone wants to take a look.

Stuff I know I need to do:
- Adjust difficulties, I think guitar is probably 2 dots, bass is probably more like 2.
- Look at guitar/bass overdrive, 97%ing both of them on expert didn’t get me to 5-stars on either, which it seems like it should have.
- Keep working on vocals, some of the timings need tweaking.
- Keys? There’s some synth at the start and end, but I’m not sure that’d be any fun to play or really worth charting. Haven’t found any sheet music that includes it either.
- Get my wife to play it.

If “Helen Wheels” and “England Rock Anthems” has taught us anything, it’s if a song has keys in them, you may as well chart ’em out. Also I went around looking for a MIDI of the song, and I think those chords you’re looking for are:
M10.1: E+G#+B
M10.4: E+A+C#
M12.1: E+B+D
M12.4: E+A+C
Rinse repeat.
Another thing to note for keys, when charting chords, you wanna put 1/8 of space between them as opposed to 1/16. Because keys are a somewhat more challenging instrument than guitar, the extra space give the player more time to react.
May 15, 2013 at 8:12 pm #399673as a C3 author I say chart any amount of keys that is present, but as a keys player I gotta tell ya, i HATE it when the song has “keys” and as the designated keys player at my local events I get up there…and then it’s something like I Believe in a Thing Called Love….great instrumentation and ridiculously boring keys
