I understand that you’re generalizing about this. But if you do find an offending pop-up, the nice thing to do would be to report it to the ones responsible for hosting said ads.
It’s one to avoid it altogether (with mentioned ad-blocking plugins and download scripts) and leave a website to rot, but it’s better to bring up the trouble with the one pulling the strings.
I would but it’s literally everyone that uses Mediafire that I download from. Like, anytime I’m brought to mediafire at all i get a pop-up
January 26, 2017 at 8:17 am #480618Please take this suggestion seriously. I don’t see a single ad on any mediafire page because I’m using uBlock.
It’s not that I see ads on mediafire (i’m using ublock as well), it’s that it opens up a new tab sometimes ones with fake virus warnings and other nonsense. When you’re downloading sometimes 20-50 songs, you don’t necessarily want an additional 50 tabs opened with messages that don’t allow you to close them easily.
Also, Mega is slow through browser compared to any other site. I want to boycott both.

Good point, I hate those tabs. Fortunately Ublock has a very simple way to fix it, open one of the download links to mediafire, click the ublock icon, and in the ublock window the icon at the bottom left corner is called ‘toggle the blocking of all popups for this site’. Click it once, you’ll see a red X through the icon. That should stop it altogether.
But for all the time’s I’ve downloaded from mediafire, I’ve never once had that happen to me (annoying tabs and popups I mean) so it’s obviously different for everyone.
Keeping the content Canadian since 2017!

This right here, Adblock Plus has severely decreased in effectiveness due to the owners allowing companies to pay for their ads to be whitelisted, among other things.
As I understand it, in order for ABP to whitelist any ad providers, some strict rules need to be met such as not being annoying (ie. autoplaying with audio) of overly intrusive (ie. size). I think this is good because it causes ad providers to clean up their act or get left behind.
January 26, 2017 at 11:58 pm #480630I use ublock orgin in Chrome and Opera, and I get zero, zip, nada pop ups. You might want to try it.
January 27, 2017 at 8:17 am #480637That’s the only good reason in my opinion (worthless as it may be).
Interestingly people using my server get detailed stats thanks to the scripts farottone cooked up…and multiple people have rejected the offer to host on my server.
I’m not trying to stir the pot but I can’t think of even one good reason for some to not take you up on this offer. It is better for everyone all around. I really appreciate your generosity.
January 27, 2017 at 3:35 pm #480638I use MEGA these days.
January 27, 2017 at 11:10 pm #480654I don’t really like the ads and pop-ups in Mediafire, which either have increased or AdBlock has gotten worse at stopping them. It’s still better than a lot of horrid hosting sites (at least you don’t have to wait a minute to get your link) but still something I’ve grown to avoid despite using it a lot years ago. I don’t care for having a download count anymore.
I use Mega now which has been acceptable for me. I have heard some people can’t get it to work though. But I host other files there and it’s easy and gives me more than enough space for free, and doesn’t come with the crap Mediafire does. At least I consider it a step up.
As much as I love RB and would put some effort into making the customs process easier I’m not paying for extra space. Maybe when I actually start getting a regular income I can get some server hosting. I would actually like to.
January 28, 2017 at 9:07 pm #480683Mediafire has been around longer than all of the other options (excluding FTP server) and is specifically tailored to sharing download links (unlike Dropbox or another cloud host). The most annoying thing is the download cap it places on end users, and to that I’d suggest authors make a .7z of all their songs in one or two big downloads. That’d at least make Nemo’s job easier, and with 50 GB of storage it certainly isn’t hard to squeeze in on Mediafire.

Adblock has gotten worse. But there is a way around it with just Adblock.
First, I recommend uBlock Origin instead, but here is the way around:
On Mediafire page, use middle mouse on download button to download. No popups will come and you can exit the page like normal. But with uBlock, you don’t need to go through the extra steps.
February 2, 2017 at 10:34 pm #480918Don’t forget you can configure Adblock Plus to disable “non-intrusive advertising” or to use a more thorough filter subscription.

I think I use some sort of AdBlock fork rather than the standard. I have been meaning to get something like uBlock (and maybe uMatrix too).
February 4, 2017 at 8:30 pm #480987All you have to do is close it before it loads. That’s what ive been doing
