I’ve pretty much been playing them and similar games like Guitar Hero/Clone Hero since 2008. I don’t see myself stopping that anytime soon.

April 2, 2019 at 9:35 pm #504211So I’m extremely late to the game and just found the forum today. I have an old 360 in a box upstairs along with all the original Rock Band 1 & 2 instruments. The ability to do all of this sounds amazing, but from the little research I’ve done it sounds like any RB3 I purchase today would have the custom songs patched out? Is that true?

Not entirely.
If you buy the game digitally through the XBox Live store, or if you buy a disc of the republished game by Mad Catz, then you are correct. These versions of Rock Band 3 have Title Update 5 baked into them, which is the update that broke customs. Sadly there is no way to force a downgrade to an earlier Title Update.
However, if you find a disc of the original game’s release by EA/MTV Games, then you will be able to play customs. You will want to use Title Update 4, as earlier updates won’t have proper venues (band animations, camera cuts, etc.) when using customs or even certain songs from the Rock Band Network. Info on where to find Title Update 4, and how to get it and customs to where your XBox 360 can use them, can be found elsewhere in the forums.
Be careful when hunting for an MTV/EA disc, since it’s not unheard of for a Mad Catz disc to end up in an MTV/EA case. Google probably can help find info on how to tell the discs apart.
April 9, 2019 at 2:36 am #504328I don’t actually play Rock Band, but I like to make customs for it and to help searching through every little thing of it. Also, I actually discovered my music intellect trying to do customs way back on the RBN1 era, so I own my life for Rock Band, for real.
April 12, 2019 at 9:10 pm #504396Been going eleven years strong now. Since GH2 days. There have been times I’ve taken an extended break, but I always come back. When I get tired of Rivals I play customs, and vice versa. Only thing that could stop me would be losing finger dexterity. Definitely a bit stiffer now compared to 2008.

Me too….my fingers get stiff before playing a song. I’m trying to losin’ my fingers and arm to be comferable on the neck. GH/RB community will stay strong as long people discover customs. When Clone Hero was made people from GH games from past are jumping back in because of that game.
April 13, 2019 at 4:13 pm #504407It would be great if these games became “cool” again amongst a newer generation of kids out there. But current lack of instrument availability is going to prevent that from happening any time soon, not to mention a finite number of customs compatible RB3 discs.
April 13, 2019 at 4:16 pm #504408I don’t play the games anymore, and if I did run though any charts/customs in Reaper or EoF, it would be to practice my drumming. I’m strictly an author at this point.
how can you author but not play?

It’s very simple: You author songs without playing the game.

don’t knock a good thing
April 25, 2019 at 4:23 pm #504661I love playing. That’s the whole point of customs. So that you can play songs you’ve always wished for.
April 25, 2019 at 11:56 pm #504668Playing maybe. Authoring, probably not. I’ve yet to stop doing that even when I went a period of time almost never even picking up a plastic instrument unless it was to test a chart (if even that).
I might take breaks, pull away for a while, but I’ve yet to have the desire to quit.
