Have to be perfectly honest…I have never heard of this guy before this thread. I’m 40 years old and am reasonably versed in mainstream music released between 1960 and today. I’m also American.
There’s your problem – in the USA, he was a bit of a one-hit wonder for this song. In Australia, however… he was huge for years. Was also the first stadium concert I ever went to.

Oddly enough I know this song, but not because of John Farnham. The song was cowritten by Chris Thompson, best known as the lead singer of Mannfred Mann’s Earth Band during their “Blinded by the Light” days. In the ’90s Thompson toured with Alan Parsons as lead singer of the Alan Parsons Live Project. This particular iteration of Parsons’s band released an album in 1995 that had, among other things, a studio recording of “You’re the Voice” sung by Thompson and produced by Parsons.
So yeah, because I’m such a Parsons fanboy, I’m one of those few who can recognize the song and still wonder who in the world is John Farnham.

I first heard this song from the movie, Hot Rod. I had no idea that the artist was Australian until I was looking into Aussie artists to chart for the C3 Aussie Pack. I ended up being too lazy to author it at that time. Laziness struck again when I wanted to do the awesome Blind Guardian cover of the song for one of the C3 Cover Song Packs, so I am quite grateful that Dash is not a lazy bum like me and got this one done.
Too Bloody Right he’s a big deal in Australia!!!…Well he was anyway.
Now he’s prob most known for having more Farewell tours in the last 15 years than even Phil Collins has managed!
Great tune tho, so cheers mate for the Farnsey!!!
