Currently working on “45” by Shinedown. In the chorus the drummer seems to be hitting the same crash cymbal, he just hits it harder on certain beats so it sounds different. How would you go about authoring this?
If it’s the same cymbal, I’d keep it on green. When there’s a double crash during the chorus, do Yellow + Green.
Basically what Demon said.
Usually*, the pattern is the drummer riding on the one crash and then using their other hand to hit another crash on the down beat. In that you would chart it as a double crash on Y+G. Usually the pattern is
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
G G GR G G G GR G
The accented down beat makes it
YG G GR G G G GR G
However, if you are positive* that it’s the same crash being hit harder and NOT a double crash…. Keep the riding part on G but then move the “accented” harder hit to Blue. That shows visual difference on the audible change. However, even in this case, it’s usually safe to just use the previous method of the Y+G on the accent. If using the single, if there are a lot of blue hits elsewhere, you can use Y for the solo hit as well… but normally Blue is fine.

This is what I was thinking. Just wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks a lot.
