Creating customs using a mac?

So this is the situation. Im really excited about getting to create some customs, but unfortunately the only thing i have access to is a mac. So i was wondering if mac users are able to use the same programs as windows users such as reaper, magma etc, or if we have to do it differently somehow. Or if it is maybe impossible. For an example i downloaded the C3 con tools, but it is an exe. file which mac doesn’t support. I have skimmed through Farottone’s tutorial pdf, a couple of tutorial vids and also checked some forums but haven’t really found any answers to this.

I would be really thankful for some kind of explanation on this matter as i’m really psyched about getting started, and think that I could deliver some real quality customs in the future. Sorry if this is obvious and I seem lazy for not finding out myself, but creating customs seems like a really time consuming project and I don’t want to spend hours on creating my first custom only to find out that it can’t be finished. Thank you on beforehand.

You can author but you can’t compile. Bootcamp or a virtualized Windows environment are your best bets.

Well that’s a bummer. Do you happen to know if it could be done using a program such as winebottler, which allows mac users to use most windows programs? Or am I basically screwed?

No idea. If you have access to a Windows license, even something old (when C3 started I was compiling on a Windows Vista machine), installing a virtual machine is pretty simple.

Okay, i’ll definitely look into it more. Thank you for your time!

I can’t speak for Winebottler on Mac, but I author using Wine on Linux, and Reaper works perfectly well. I can also get Magma to run after installing some .NET frameworks, though it sometimes crashes when building multitrack customs. The only way I can get C3ConTools to work is through the visualizer via Magma after compiling.

The main form does a check for a few other requirements that may or may not be needed for all the different tools, so that may crash. But if you want to launch Visualizer alone, you can add -visualizer to the shortcut and it bypasses the main screen. Same goes for almost all other features. The valid arguments are listed somewhere in the changelog I think.

Well I have no idea what .NET frameworks are, but do you perhaps know where I could get my hands on them?

C3ConTools technically “launches” fine, but when it opens up, I’m greeted to a black box, as well as a message about me running it in Administrative Mode, which I at least never set it to.

I could try your suggestion after work, though, and see if that helps.

EDIT: I had enough time to test it now, and my god that worked! Thanks, now I gotta see if any of the other extensions I’d use will work.

EDIT 2: It seems art extractor, dta extractor, and the song packager shortcuts still bring up the black screen, but the rest actually work. Thanks a lot for the pointer!

Nemo’s threads where you can download C3ConTools and MagmaC3 include links to download the necessary .NET frameworks, just check the OP. It’s an official Microsoft server that is linked, and it’s a free download. You should also see about installing Visual C++ for C3Con Tools, which is also linked in the OP of the thread for that.

Thanks a million, hope this works!
