So hi, I’ve been in the customs scene for a long time now (since GH2 days) and I figured it’d be nice to have a spot for me to release my drum customs other than youtube. Most of them are drums/expert only, although some may have guitar as well. I don’t have everything uploaded yet but I’m in the process of doing so (also adding OD to them as well since I usually don’t add OD).
About My Charts
I’m very opinionated when it comes to how to chart things. I believe a mix of accuracy and fun is best. If a part can be changed to be more fun without sacrificing too much accuracy, I’m all for it. I’m also a big proponent of this HMX philosophy: “
The general philosophy of Expert Drum authoring is that rhythmically, it is a literal transcription of the actual drum performance.”
Anyway, I follow some strict drum guidelines such as:
- Always charting flams as a single 2 pad note (as is standard HMX practice)
- Charting all ghost notes regardless of audibility (as long as it fits an established pattern)
- Not differentiating accented notes from unaccented notes (since they’re played on the same drum/cymbal)
- Following the drummer’s sticking as closely as possible (did he lead this fill with his left hand? then it should be played similarly)
- Making sure to differentiate toms/cymbals. If the drummer played a left crash and then a right crash, they shouldn’t both be charted as G if they’re right next to each other.
There’s always wiggle room in these situations but it’s my general charting philosophy. Most of my charts will only have Expert and won’t have any extra polish like character animations or venue work. All of my drums charts WILL include practice sections and 1x/2x versions (currently updating old customs). A lot of my charts use drum transcriptions or live videos as a reference to keep things accurate, but I’m definitely not perfect and make mistakes. If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that you think something in my chart is wrong, let me know.
I make video previews of all of my customs. A lot of them won’t be 100% up to date since I’m going through them all and making tweaks/adding OD, but they’re good enough to show you how the song will look.

Formatted the OP to look cleaner as well. As you can see from the artists I have listed, you can tell what I’ll be uploading soon. I currently plan on finishing the Conquering Dystopia self-titled and then going through the rest of my old customs. After that, I have more Periphery/BTBAM/AAL to chart. Prog Metal fans rejoice!

I know I’ve gotten flack about the Paramore customs because there are already full band versions available. I get it, why upload these expert only drum customs when the full band version is already available? Well, not to discredit the hard work that those people have done to bring those full band customs to you, but the drum charts are just not as accurate as I think they should be. I’ve talked with one of the original authors of those full band customs and suggested using my drum charts instead, in which case I’d be happy to take mine down. But if not, I’d rather let people choose. If you want to play other instruments on the song, download the other custom. If you only play expert drum customs (like I do), then you’re better off downloading mine.
Anyway, that’s all the Paramore customs I have. I’ve skimmed through the database and I don’t think there are too many other customs that I’ve charted that other people have as well, but I will be uploading them regardless.

I know this will sound like I want to get into an argument but I’m not, but I still have to say it.

The fact that you think your charts are more accurate does not make them more accurate: either they are or they aren’t but it doesn’t depend on your subjective call. On top of that, you are not authoring to Rock Band standards, so technically if people are used to play expert in game they will be objectively worst off playing your versions for some parts (for example the overcharting compared to what they are used to play, the missing open hi hat notes, etc.)You can certainly make the case that you think your charts are more accurate, that the way you chart is better than what authoring rules state, etc. but it’s unfair to other authors to tell people that they are better off downloading your songs instead of those of other authors because yours are better. You take the extra step of doing preview videos, which is very good: let people watch those videos and weigh their options. If they only want drums and watching the videos think the way you auhor is better, they will choose your versions. If not, they will go for the other versions.
As someone else who prides themselves on their drum charts, I do agree a lot with what you say. Do note up front however…. in no way does it make anyone right or wrong. The best part about customs is that it’s based on opinion, authoring habits, and a lot of variables. I tend to chart along the same lines as you do, but you need to know where it might cause faults.
I like the follow a lot of your same rules, likely for both main reasons I believe you do. You want the chart to play AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to how the drummer is really playing it, and you likely have an E-Kit that’s set up like a normal drum set. The biggest parts to remember with these is that (and it’s really no fault to yourself) if you cater to specifically one type of setup over another, then it will play awkward for someone.
I have a mildly modded Ion kit. I have a split for an additional green cymbal which I mounted on the left side so that I have a true crash to hit when doing Hi-hat rhythms (instead of having to jump all the way to the far side of the kit just to come back). I also have a split Blue cymbal behind my hi-hat. This is for being able to hit “open” hi hats charted on blue instead of doing the quick jump to the blue (ride) and back. However, it helps to try and accommodate to both. Section coming up with two open hits with a close inbetween?

Yes the drummer is playing the hihat while it’s closing in between, but someone playing with a pro RB kit will have to jump quickly to the right (
, then back to left (y), and then back again, and then back again. I tend to just drop the yellow paired with that snare.It also works against you a lot too where you almost have to chart things against what the stock RB kits would like. I’ve charted a LOT of Rush. Peart like’s fills which focus on snare/toms, and a lot of fills start with a single right hand snare and a left hand high tom. There isn’t a better way to chart that than R Y B B. Awkward as hell to play on a stock kit, intuitive and fun on an e-kit with the snare between your legs. Hell, take the chorus line on drums from Clockwork Angels (all toms):
Ignoring the fact it’s played across 4 toms so I had to adjust it for 3 toms…. there isn’t a good way to do that which plays well for both. I’m going to choose which works for me.
tl;dr
I agree mostly with how you chart, or at least where you are coming from. I’m the same way (minus the always Ghost Notes thing). It’s not right or wrong, however. Thank you for being up front with people about what to look forward to in your customs.
Been busy lately but finally got around to finishing Conquering Dystopia’s self-titled! Here are the last two songs:
I have tabs for the latest AAL and BTBAM albums that I’ll most likely be charting. Also Periphery 3. Maybe some other random tracks thrown in there.
Still need to go through my past customs and update them with OD. It’ll take some time but I’ll hopefully get through them all (wish I had done so in the beginning…)
