Just a simple question… Anybody here ever cared or disliked censorship in songs and such?
Personally I normally don’t care as long it is so minor that it is barely noticable… But I recently got “Nightmare” and Harmonix censored a very major word in the song and ye’h… Not too happy about it.

Harmonix cannot be blamed for this situation, though. It’s the FCC we should be pointing fingers at.
November 25, 2013 at 4:26 am #409673I strongly dislike censorship when it’s in the form of bleeping or muting the song. But I don’t when a radio-friendly version of the song is created. The one I always think of is Cee Lo Green’s Fuck You. I much prefer Forget You, the radio version. But when it’s bleep bleep bleep yeah bleep bleep…that’s just silly.
November 25, 2013 at 10:31 am #409687I always wish they would have released a M-rated alternate version of the game that worked the same as the original but allowed to hear all songs uncensored, though I know that would be extremely tricky on a realistic technical side ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />
My “favorite” would probably be Killing In The Name by RATM in the outro… “… you I won’t do what you tell me! Mother …! Uh!”

Ah yes, I agree, the GH2 cover did it wonderfully. It wouldn’t have been that hard to copypaste a few phrases from earlier in the song, but I guess they were worried about copyright things working with the real song and all.

Another thing that pisses me off about it is how inconsistent it is.
Some songs allow words like ass and piss, like “The Ultimate Showdown (RBN Mix)” and “Kickstart My Heart” but others don’t like “Feel Good, Inc”
Still, it’s better than Guitar Hero’s censorship.
The Rock Show anyone?
“Getting d***k with my best friend”

Or don’t forget “Rockstar”… They block out a one or two in that song yet didn’t block out any of the other swear words, mentions of sexual activity, etc.

I read this as getting dick with my best friend… i know the song very well but… i guess it was a Freudian slip…
makes me look at blink in a whoooole new way

I think both games handled it well in some cases and horridly in others. Some of the bad ones weren’t really possible to do any other way though, I’d think. I think the FCC definitely really made some dumb calls like the censorship on The Rock Show. It made the song sound inadvertently dirty when I played it the first time, as I’d never heard the real version before.
In the case of Kickstart My Heart, I don’t know why the word ‘ass’ was allowed to slide. Maybe because its using it in a non-sexual context, but I couldn’t say.

Kickstart My Heart isn’t the only song to have ass uncensored. Other songs include “Girl At The Video Game Store”, “Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)” and possibly others that I’m unaware of due to not having bought them
December 29, 2013 at 10:02 pm #411351I remember reading the RBN docs back in the day when the censorship page was still around (if anyone has a copy of it, I’d like to know since C3 deleted it from their copy). Some songs can get away with some words based on use in the song, and they have the examples of “goddamn” in “Undone (The Sweater Song)” by Weezer and “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s an Arms Race” by Fall Out Boy. It was left in Undone because it was only used one, whereas in This Ain’t A Scene, it’s said several times and thus was cut. It also depends on what cut of the song Harmonix gets. If it’s a radio edit that censors out the words anyway (such as “Feel Good Inc.” by. Gorillaz), then that’s the label’s fault and not Harmonix’s. At the same time, if a song has a lot of content considered objectionable, then things that are considered unobjectionable in other songs may get censored. For example, “Police Truck” by Dead Kennedys has the words “shit” and “dick” within close proximity if each other, and both are censored. “Ass” is also in that part of the song, and gets censored as well, probably because it, as well as “shit” and “dick”, make up an area that is too obscene without censorship.
I can’t explain Guitar Hero’s censorship, though the censorship in Band Hero was due to the game trying to get an E10 rating with songs that would boost the rating.

Plus once it’s done and overwith, it’s pointless to go back.
December 30, 2013 at 2:00 am #411365Speaking of Guitar Hero, 2 Minutes to Midnight anyone?
“To … the unborn in the womb”
Not only is it stupid to censor the word kill in a T-rated game, but it make it sound sooooo much worse than it really is
