Can I use an existing chart, “enhance” it and release it?

Though I haven’t released a chart on any platform for any game (be it RB3, CH, etc.), I can’t really say that I’m new to the charting world. I’ve made several attempts at it through these last two years, but I always found myself leaving these projects as half-a-page of scribbled lines. Now, with the current situation and, now that I have some free time, I’d like to try once more to fulfill that desire, though not in a way I would’ve expected.

I’ve been thinking about using some existing charts, try to “enhance” them a bit and then release them. That is because, I’d like to have a, somewhat solid ground, on which I can do some alterations and, in the way of doing so, learn how these customs are made. Also, since I have some experience on mixing music, I desire to have stems on these customs as well.

[Mod edit: Some details removed to prevent accidental stepping on toes.]

The question is, am I (or anyone) allowed to do such thing? I think I read somewhere, sometime, that it was possible, but that it was essential to contact the original authors. Then, I don’t know how to do so. I’d like to get some advice on the matter. Oh, and thanks for reading, if you did.

        Hello!

You won’t be the only one with an eye for improving older customs, however, you are correct in that we do ask that you work with the original authors when doing so, when possible. Our general rule is, when you see a custom you want to tweak, drop a line to the custom’s author with some details about what you have in mind, and then give them a reasonable amount of time to respond. For pretty much all authors who offer their work through C3U, you can contact them by leaving a private message here on the forums. If they respond and are willing to work with you or let you do improvements yourself, great! If they decline, then you are still welcome to publish a custom of the song, provided it is entirely new work (either your own or with collaborators).

We consider 30 days a reasonable amount of time. If you have not received a response in that time, then you are free to do your improvements and release a new version of the custom yourself, as long as you properly credit the original author(s) in your release.

By the way, nice Pink Floyd reference.

Thanks for the reply and the kindness, FujiSkunk! I’ll try what you’ve pointed out there anytime soon.
