Here’s a song I’ve had collecting digital dust on my drive at about 80% completion for years, finally finished up for all of you. The music of K-On was practically made for Rock Band, with every instrument always having a fun role to play. It’s no surprise there’s already a number of customs available for the series’ fictional band, Ho-kago Team Time. Today that number grows by one.

Now if anyone had seen the 2011 K-On movie, a major moment in the story was a performance of this very song in London’s Jubilee Gardens right on the bank of the Thames. I find it a perfect way to bring us to our next upcoming release…

After going punk, after going poppy, after going robotic, after going brvtal, we’re going rosbeef with 5 bangers from quite famous artists! Starting off with Norman Cook, a.k.a. Fatboy Slim’s biggest bang, The Rockafeller Skank, instantly recognisable because of its only lyric. Next is Roger Glover and Ronnie James Dio’s gigantic hit Love Is All, which is sure going to be your worst nightmare on vocals! Of course, who could say UK without Britpop? And I deliver here with Supergrass’ Alright, complete with that hyperactive piano and filled with british youth! But wait, did you see that? Let’s take a closer look! Next up we’ve got Lux Aeterna, the theme song to the 2000 box office hit Requiem For A Dream. Perfect for your drug actions or plans to expose the CIA about these little green guys. Atupomaruru released a guitar cover too that you should definitely check out! To conclude this quite good pack, here’s The Who’s Boris The Spider, often recognisable as being the first song to feature the growling that would because more popular with the birth of Death Metal!

Arctic Monkeys – When the Sun Goes Down

              yZgUmgL.jpg

Orginally known as “Scummy”, When the Sun Goes Down is a song about prostitution. The song starts slowly with just Alex Turner’s vocals and guitar, but soon becomes a fast-paced rock song after the line “I said he’s a scumbag don’t you know.”

The song is really fun on all instruments, and as usual with AM the lyrics are quite fast-paced.

              uTR0LAZ.jpg

Favourite Worst Nightmare is my favorite AM album, which is why I picked three songs from this one. D is for Dangerous is sung by Matt Helders (drums) and Alex Turner (guitar) and I really wanted to reflect it on the venue.

This is a great song for duet vocals, and the song is really catchy!

              X8Rero3.jpg

I’ve had that song stuck in my head for days when I started charting this one. The drum part is really interesting and the song gets very intense near the end.

Arctic Monkeys – The Bad Thing

              8xEeNoR.jpg

Originally, “What if You Were Right the First Time?” was insisted by Jamie to be in its place on Favourite Worst Nightmare, but Alex insisted for “The Bad Thing” to make the final cut, in exchange for never performing it live. That would explain why this song stands out a bit in this album, as it is (arguably) more upbeat and poppy.

I’ve gotta say, Klo, this is one of my favorite releases thus far. I never got into the Arctic Monkeys until their AM album, which I really, really enjoy, but it is arguably a much more poppy sound compared to their other releases. These four tracks are sooo different and seem to reflect that contrast, in a good way. I look forward to jamming out to them, but I will admit I wish there had been some inclusions from the much more down-beat AM…

AJ… a quick Googling tells me it’s either the Stones or Traffic, and I’ll unashamedly tell you I’m rooting for Traffic. I’ve wanted Dear Mr. Fantasy as a track for a loooong time, and clues in the database tell me I might be right… Fingers crossed!

Thanks to everybody involved in this month-long event!

The Rolling Stones – Their Satanic Majesties Request 50th Anniversary pack

The Rolling Stones – 2000 Man

                    VOCALS: EchoOfMystery

The Rolling Stones would be the first to admit that their 1967 psychedelic LP, Their Satanic Majesties Request, didn’t quite go as well as planned. They simply weren’t playing to their strengths, and the experiment felt a little forced. That said, the album does have some amazing gems, like the sort of a futuristic folk song, “2000 Man” is one of the most under-recognized and underappreciated songs in the Rolling Stones catalog. Opening with a gorgeous, delicate acoustic fingerpicking pattern , the lyrics speak of a future society where man’s individual identity is all but lost. There is a science fiction slant to the words, which indeed are some of Mick Jagger’s finest. The song moves into a middle section where the band had a chance to flex their rock muscle, one of the hardest rocking passages written and played on the Their Satanic Majesties Requests album. The rhythm change is quite nice, Watts drumming is very strong, the acoustics guitars are more effective than usual, and the contrast between Jagger’s weak voice on the verses and his gutsier style on the chorus is quite effective.

The Rolling Stones – In Another Land

                    GJttx1p.jpg

                    GUITAR/BASS/KEYS: Kemiroch

                    VOCALS: EchoOfMystery

                    REDUCTIONS: wingsoveramerica

The lone Rolling Stones Bill Wyman-written and -sung effort, “In Another Land” captured the psychedelic atmosphere of the day to a T, and it actually borders on being a parody. A whimsical, trippy ode, these days it sounds like a psychedelic Spinal Tap song, with words describing blue trees and flowers. The tremolo-soaked vocals only add to the period charm here. Interestingly, the bridge section is one of the hardest-rocking efforts by the Rolling Stones from this period. Rumored to have Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane on harmony vocals, this song was also issued as a single.

                    The Rolling Stones – She’s A Rainbow

                    QRT5F1y.jpg

                    GUITAR/KEYS: Kemiroch

                    BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery

                    REDUCTIONS: wingsoveramerica

Arguably the prettiest track ever by a crew not known for “pretty” – a pastoral piano melody wrapped in chamber-music strings arranged by a pre-Led Zeppelin John Paul Jones, with child-like la-la-la’s swooping through like gnomes in a playground. It’s a beautifully constructed piece of psychedelic pop. But the dissonant breakdown and the faintly lewd vision of a girl who “comes in colors everywhere” (a line possibly bitten off Love’s “She Comes in Colors”) reminds you who is behind it.

The Rolling Stones – 2000 Light Years from Home
                    AjgsteG.jpg

                    GUITAR/BASS/KEYS: Kemiroch

                    VOCALS: EchoOfMystery

                    REDUCTIONS: wingsoveramerica

The penultimate song “2000 Light Years From Home.” Jagger supposedly wrote the lyrics in prison following his drug bust. “It’s so very lonely,” he sings. “You’re 2,000 light years from home.” This song is a psychedelic nightmare, capturing the desolation of feeling lost in the cosmos, as Jones’ Mellotron casts an ominous spell.
