MAGfest 2015 is just a week and change away! Courtesy of awesome C3 member MiltoniusPrime (who is running the Rock Band freeplay stage at the event), I’ll be co-hosting a panel on custom songs in music games with some of the Rocksmith guys. I expect a lot of it will revolve around Pro Guitar vs. Rocksmith, but I’ll try to fit in a brief history of C3 and Rock Band customs in general.

There will also be a ton of customs on display at the Rock Band freeplay stage, and when I say “a ton”, I mean a ton.

The panel is on Friday, January 23, at 5:30 PM EST. If you live anywhere near the Washington, D.C. area, come to MAGfest! You’ll get to see some Rock Band nerds at a panel, but most importantly, you’ll get to play Rock Band with a bunch of additional nerds.

If you click on the link and hover over that timespot on the MAGfest schedule, the panel description opens triumphantly with:

“The age of the 5-button plastic guitar is over!”

I really wanted to go to MagFest, but the funds just aren’t there. i’m about 4 hours out. If that changes, I’ll definitely be at the panel :]

Yeah, I know, but I’ll do my best to pimp out legacy instruments. I do expect a lot of it to deal with Pro Guitar specifically because of the Rocksmith context.

I’d love to see the panel but the Jontron panel starts halfway through yours <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_frown.gif” />

          yeah thats my fault. =]

i feel like most people kinda got tired of the old guitar hero style guitars, but nobody seems to have any idea that RB3 includes the pro mode stuff or keys or anything. i want to get the word out.

sorry if i offended anyone who is very attached to their 5 button guitars. =]

hahaha yeeeaaahhh i guess so. =] sorry. =]

i feel like when i talk to people who just dont know much about these games, theres a typical “pff… waste of time! learn a REAL guitar!” response… and when i tell them guess what… i AM learning real guitar. with this game. suddenly the wall has broken down and they’re interested.

magfest is full of musicians, so theres a disproportionate amount of those. if ruffling feathers just a little bit gets people to pay attention, we all win. the people who are into the 5 button guitars dont need to be sold on any of this, they’re already on our side.

Also worth noting is how “plastic drums” and “plastic keys” is actually extremely good learning tools for learning the actual thing whenever somebody goes “lol plastic guitars, you’re not learning anything”

Boy, the flight simulators enthusiasts must have it really tough…

on the ‘plastic drums’ point: anyone who makes it to magfest, take a look in our ‘jamspace’. the drum kit there is an old roland v-drum set i personally used for rock band for a while. i turned it into a rock band kit. its awesome. =] painted the drum rims, got color coded wires, got it all tuned and set up perfectly…. it was the greatest rock band kit ever.

in the jamspace, they use it for ‘real’ drumming. pff. real drummers. hah.

What those people don’t know is that you can plug with RB Keyboard into an amp with a MIDI cable and play it, it can’t be connected to both a console and an amp unfortunately, but still!

Yeah it’s a neat party trick. I used to connect mine to my phone using this usb to midi adapter and a usb to micro-sd adapter. My phone then (Note 2?) supported usb natively so it was just plug and play, open a midi app, bam.
