Six customs for this month, all featuring Clapton. Clapton, Clapton, and more Clapton.

I’ll start things off with two from Blind Faith. They only released one album, but what a classic! These will make three songs now available from this album, and AJ and I have one more nearly finished.

The album actually debuted to quite a bit of (child porn) controversy, because their producer decided to use a nude photo of an 11 year old girl on the cover. For some strange reason, when the US version was released, that cover was changed.

One story says that the model asked for a horse in payment, but settled for forty pounds.

Both of these songs were done jointly with AJFOne23:

Next up, two classics from Cream, an early one and a late piece.

This great song is from their first album. Believe it or not, it was the very first song played by a new Rock Radio station in Boston, in the 60’s, WBCN.

The song includes some great harmonies, and a short, but iconic, guitar solo. That solo alone makes this one worth having.

    Download: http://customscreators.com/index.php?/page/index.html/_/badge-r18246

Badge appeared on their Goodbye album, as Cream was splitting up. Everyone was charged with song-writing, and Clapton was supposed to write this song, but wasn’t getting very far. George Harrison dropped by and offered to help co-author, and started working on lyrics, while EC kept at the music. In the middle of Harrison’s sheet, he wrote down “bridge” during a no-lyric section. Clapton looked up, and tried to read this up-side down (not very successfully), and decided that the song was called “Badge”. That name stuck.

A while later, a rather drunk Ringo Starr walked in, and started describing these swans that he had watched in the park. Who could resist that? So, the swans, who lived in the park, became a part of the lyrics.

The guitar bridge, midway through the song, is absolutely amazing. I have found echoes of that bridge in a couple of Dire Straits works.

One of my favorite Cream songs.

Finally, two solo efforts from Clapton. These two were his biggest hits, reaching #1 and # 2 on the charts.

This was written by Bob Marley and the Wailers, and released in 1973. Clapton did his cover of it in 1974, and, as I said, his version became immensely popular. Many people, myself included, knew only of the Clapton version. Fortunately, here, at C3, you can find the Marley version as well.

Despite all of Clapton’s successes, and his amazing career, this was his only #1 hit.

This song first appeared in the 1991 movie Rush. Clapton and Will Jennings wrote this piece, and it appeared later on his Unplugged album.

The song, though it fit the film, was mostly written by Clapton about his son, Conor, who, as a four-year-old, fell out of a high-rise window to his death. It is a beautiful, sad, and moving song. I love the song, but, thinking about poor Clapton, the dad, and his dead son … it is hard to play.

Three customs for October. They range from the very new, to the really old and classic.

First up, another Nightwish song, again from the Mustis 666 collection, but now full band.

This is another absolutely beautiful Nightwish song, but most of the instruments are pretty easy. The highlights are Tarja’s duet with herself, phenomenal singing, and the keyboard work. The song ends with two separate keyboard solos, and this one is a must for those who love keys.

This completes all of the first album, Angels Fall First. So we now have the complete album available.

If you want, you can download the entire album, for 1X bass, here:

If you prefer 2X, the complete album is here:

Next, my first try at The Dear Hunter. I plan to do several more from Act IV, but here:

My last custom this month is from 1967. This song was written by Chet Powers (who sometimes used the pseudonym Dino Valenti). It first appeared, in 1964, on a Kingston Trio album, and became a standard at their concerts. Two years later, Jefferson Airplane gave it a whirl, but the version that we all remember today was performed by the Youngbloods. Their take became a true Hippie anthem. It is hard not to think of Peace, Love, and Hippie-beads when you hear this song. Unless you think of Marge Simpson, when she used a magic talisman to bring about world peace, and everyone, everywhere, was singing this song.

This song has great guitar work, mixing two guitars into quite a wonderful flow. I also had quite a lot of fun playing the song on bass. The bass track is simple, but compelling. Anyway, break out your bongs, turn on that lava lamp, and groove.

    Till next month …

    Great release

I have had Get Together as a WIP forever but never could get it to feel quite right because of the two guitars.

Thanks for sharing this and saving me from staring at it still being unfinished.

I look forward to breaking out my bong & seeing my lava lamp again. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

Thanks. The two guitars were a pain. I mostly followed the tapping guitar part, but switched over three or four times to match the flavor of the song. My first draft used one guitar throughout, but it didn’t feel right in game, so I kept changing the chart around. I have no idea if I finally got a decent mix.

For this month, more from The Dear Hunter, and also a 3-pack of classics from Donovan.

Of these tunes, Squeaky Wheel is a bit less progressive than the others, more of a standard modern alternative song. My favorites are Is There Anybody Here, which ends with a guitar solo that runs over one-and-a-half minutes, and Wait, which has an incredible melody, and really scary, haunting lyrics.

By the way, these charts include only the main vocalist. The harmonies were too tough for me. If anyone wants to tackle Dear Hunter harmonies, let me know, and I’ll send you my files.

For the other customs, I ventured back half-a-century, to the psychedelic supergroup – Donovan.

Donovan was built around its singer and song-writer, Donovan Leitch (not to be confused with the successful modern actor by the same name. But, to be fair, that actor is Donovan’s son).

Donovan had four top-ten hit singles, Sunshine Superman, which actually hit #1 for a very short time, Mellow Yellow, topping out at #2, Hurdy Gurdy Man, which reached #5, and Atlantis, climbing to the seven spot.

Hurdy is already in our database, and, if you don’t have it, get it! Great song, great chart.

    I added Sunshine and Mellow:

Still, my favorite Donovan song was not one of these massive hits – I love Season of the Witch, and had to have that one done for Halloween.

I was hoping one day Donovan would make a showing. Thanks for these great Donovan selections and also for The Youngbloods.

Get Together was a beautiful anthem from my generation.
