“Battle Without Honor or Humanity” actually has multitracks available somewhere. They’re unmixed, unfortunately, but I thought I’d point that out. If you want me to link you to them, PM me and I’ll find them.

Kill Bill was full of songs you might not know by name but you’ll definitely recognize when you hear them, particularly “Battle without Honor or Humanity” and “The Lonely Shepherd”.

Yes, Youtubed them both, and both are instantly recognizable.

My favourite Bond theme will always been “You Know My Name” by Chris Cornell, which is a controversial pick <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />

Wait, Chris Cornell did that theme? As in, Soundgarden and Audioslave Chris Cornell?

I have to listen to that theme again. Actually, I currently have the entire chronological Bond collection on my queue to watch so I’ll get to it eventually.

I’m not sure what my favorite is, but I actually really like “Skyfall”. Having that quiet piano opening after Bond falls into the river followed by Adele’s awesome voice swelling up into an awesome orchestral-rock piece makes an awesome Bond opening.

Wow! Zamfir?!?!?! This is a strange, but wonderful, surprise! Thank you.

Had anyone had issues with “For Your Eyes Only”?

•The vocals seem like they’re off…my singer was nailing that song but getting a bunch of “Okays”. She can normally gold star something like this.

•I’ve seen this a few times before, so I’m not sure of the reason, but a lot of the notes were appearing outside of the lanes on Pro Keys (i.e., floating out in space). Is this because of the way the song is charted or something else? Makes it very difficult to play.

If you have any plans on doing “These Boots Where Made For Walking”, I’ll help out.

On my to-do list. Busy with other stuff, (including a collaboration you’re a part of). I’ll get to it. If you want to start it, go ahead, and send me your work.

Thanks for the Jethro Tull. Definitely needed more representation in Rock Band.

This month, you get a Jethro Tull Retrospective. Tull has always been one of my favorite bands, and I saw them perform several times, when they still did that sort of thing, you know, when they were “too old to rock and roll” but still alive.

Most casual fans think Jethro Tull, and think Aqualung, and nothing else. True, Aqualung is a great song, and a great album, but that was their fourth album, and, maybe, not even their best.

Their first album was called This Was, and sounds much different from their later work, for many reasons. First off, Ian Anderson hadn’t really discovered his prog side yet. Moreover, the rest of the band changed dramatically from album one to album two. Their first guitarist, Mick Abrahams, was much more of a blues/jazz man than their mainstay G-man, Martin Barre. He helped write much of their early work, and even sang.

This Was featured four instrumentals, two jazz covers, one traditional cover, and one original:

Visualizer says that this is nearly five minutes long – that’s crazy. Maybe a minute!

Abrahams left the band, replaced by Barre, for their next album, Stand Up. Here, Tull found their voice. Stand Up is a phenomenal album, with hints of progressive, jazz, blues. Every song is a gem. The great Joe Satriani has even called this album his favorite album of all time. I picked two songs from the album, and might happily go back and chart several more:

The most famous, and one that became a concert regular, was the Bach cover:

This one is a collaboration with AJFOne23. He did drums, as usual, fixed up pro keys, and tried to fix up the tempo map (the tempo map was a real pain – we’d get it right, only to find the audio out of sync play-testing. Fifth time was the charm, maybe?)

Their third album was Benefit, and, again, I chose two songs. Benefit is my personal favorite album of theirs, and it was tough to simply pick out two songs. Sossity was a must – fantastic song, with a guitar track absolutely tailor-made for game play. The other I chose is:

                      And, of course:

If you play guitar, pick this one up. This is a huge blast to play.

Finally, came the Aqualung. Harmonix released two of their songs, I did a third, and missingn042128 did a limited instrument version of Locomotive Breath. Here is one more – the sweet love song:

Ian Anderson has always been quite sensitive to the critics in the music industry. To him, Aqualung was like any other album – many different songs, centering around similar themes, put together to form an album. But the critics decided that this was a “Concept Album” with homeless and scuzzy characters like Mr. Aqualung and Cross-eyed Mary.

Like Crocodile Dundee, he said, “That’s not a knife … this is a KNIFE” and produced two true concept albums, works with only one incredibly long song. The fantastic Thick as a Brick, and the not-so-fantastic Passion Play.

The critics loved TAAB, but Passion? Not so much. After these, came another more standard album, War Child, but, to my ears, the quality had started to drop off. One of the songs on that album addressed the critics, maybe even by name, saying:

The critics falling over to tell themselves
He’s boring and really not an awful lot of fun
Well who the hell can he be when
                      He’s never had V D
And he doesn’t even sit on toilet seats

That’s it for this month. Hope you enjoy. There is still plenty more in the Tull Saga, including their heavy metal grammy winning album, Crest of a Knave. They beat out Metallica for this one, which everyone, including all of Tull, considered to be a big joke.

As usual, Tull made fun of much of this, and would introduce songs from that album in concert as from his metal years. His label even took out an ad with the tag line,

“The flute is a heavy, metal instrument!”

Thanks for all the Jethro Tull!
