If you want to spend a little more, the Roland sets are awesome. I use a TD 25kv and have never regretted once getting it. I started with the Alesis Nitro kit and really enjoyed it too, and was perfect for a kit to simply use on Rock Band.

Did you have the original rubber-pads Alesis Nitro or the more recent mesh-pads version?

A sort-of related question came to my mind…

What is the current support for pro drums in our customs? When I browse the database, I don’t see any customs with the label “PRO!” on the yellow drums icon, and there even isn’t a filter for pro drums unlike other instruments… does it perhaps mean that none or all of the customs support pro drums?

It means all support it. At least they are supposed to.

Going back to this thread to ask if you have recommendations on where to buy a MPA for PS3, because Amazon doesn’t sell those anymore and on eBay they cost about a hundred € because of shipping to EU… :argh:

Not really, these always go up and down so gotta look out for the price.

Though, you might want to look at this if you’re a bit crafty. https://www.reddit.com/r/Rockband/comments/c7d8rc/looking_for_testers_for_a_new_design_for_a_diy/

Anyone has ever tried using a Wii Midi Pro Adapter with a PS3?

I know that the Wii and PS3 share some similarities in controllers, in fact the first time we bought a Rock Band Keyboard we mistakenly bought one for the Wii, and while the black/white keys didn’t work, it still worked fine as a basic controller (i.e. select/start and the four main keys worked).

But maybe the 3 Midi Pro Adapters are totally incompatible… just asking because at the moment there is almost a 50 bucks difference in price between the PS3 adapter and the Wii/XBox ones.

There are jumpers bottom-middle of the board. JP1 and JP2 needs to be open for PS3, You need to close JP2 for Wii, but JP1 stays open.

What I did is soldering a dip switch to my PS3 MPA and I can switch at will, should be the same for a Wii one, but I didn’t test personally. Also, if you plan to use the MPA for a keyboard, I suggest soldering a jack input for a pedal to the Overdrive button while at it, assuming you care about overdrive activation, it’s much better using a pedal than searching for that button on the MPA.

It was speculated that the same technique should work on instruments/dongles, assuming they have the jumpers. This won’t work with the xbox devices as they require some sort of special chip or something.

Thanks a lot, this is very informative!

You just reminded me that I had found someone explaining the same kind of trick for the keyboard, when we bought the wrong one. Then eventually we just have returned it and bought the PS3 one from someone else, so I didn’t try the trick myself.

So apparently the MPA is similar, it doesn’t work for both without a mod, but it’s kind of manufactured with the same chip for both, so the required mod is small. I guess I will need a soldering iron for the job.

But this looks promising anyway, if I don’t manage to get a PS3 MPS for a reasonable price there is another option at least.

Just bought a cheap second hand Millenium MPS-200 eDrums. I don’t know if this model is even compatible with RockBand or will need a remapping of the midi signals, but at least it’s got midi out so we can try (once we get a MPA of course).

Hi Alternity, I am resurrecting my own thread a bit here…

How hard do you think it is to open JP2 in the Wii MPA to turn it into a PS3 MPA? I suppose you need a soldering iron to do that?

I’ve been waiting for ByteArts to start selling the new version of their MIDI Rocker LX, but their Kickstarter was expected 6 months ago and there is still no news about it, so I am seriously thinking about grabbing a Wii MPA and try to modify it as it costs ~50e while the PS3 MPA would cost me >100e. But last time I used a soldering iron was 20 years ago and I am a bit scared of destroying the thing completely

Yeah, you need a soldering iron.

What I did in my case is use a DIP switch so that I can switch at will, You can also do permanent but in the event that you’d want to use the MPA on a real Wii or on Dolphin (wii emulator) you would have to desolder/resolder again.

                      Thanks!

By the way, does the MadCatz MPA suffer from the “roll limit” issue only in RB4/PS4 or also in RB3/PS3? Eliminating this issue is one of the benefits offered by custom-made MPA, but I don’t know if it’s needed in RB3.

                      #508789

I have honestly no idea about that sorry. By experience I didn’t feel any limit playing RB3 with the MPA, to be fair the MPA was made for RB3 and not RB4.
