I swear I searched everywhere on here before working on anything that resembles MM.

The search engine can be a little finicky. But I just searched “Modest Mouse” in the Custom Chart WIPs section of the forums and my topic showed up. Granted, I have since mentioned “Modest Mouse” in the comments after what happened last night. But I guarantee that song has had a spot in my WIPs since I first started the topic in September of last year.

I didn’t mean that I searched MM and nothing came up. I saw your WIP and I obviously didn’t see GRE. All my mistake. Again, this is why I said i was sorry and will gladly take my conversion down for your hand-done version.

No disrespect towards Kamotch, but this raises a question that I have had on my mind for a while: how long should anyone wait before authoring a song that is in a separate WIP thread? I get that time is finite and life happens, but assuming Beard did see that you were working on a Gravity chart… it has been 9 months. Should he give it a year? Two years? Sometimes people lose interest in charting or something comes up and they can no longer access the web or find time to do customs. I totally get it. But when that happens, does their entire WIP list get set in stone and become off limits to active authors? How do we really know who is working on what after X months?

Nah, nothing is ever set in stone. For me the formula is:

 

-Before starting work on a song, check WIP threads to see if anyone’s doing it.

 

-If you find it, PM the author and ask how’s it’s coming along and decide together. If he’s done some work, maybe propose a collab. If he hasn’t started working on it, ask if he was planning to do it soon and if it’s ok if you’ll do it instead.

IMO, nobody can reserve a song for months. I don’t think the other author can say “I haven’t started any work on this song and will only start in a few months. But you can’t do it, it’s mine”. However if he’s planning to start soon I’ll probably move to a different song.

 

-If the author doesn’t answer for a week or two, it’s probably safe to say he’s not active in the community anymore (or maybe he just ignores PMs?). Check out the last online date and his last post date. If he’s inactive, the song is yours. If he’s an active user… well, send another message, maybe he missed the last one haha

Yaniv is absolutely right. You’re not going to KNOW if someone has “lost interest in charting” a specific song unless you ASK. And obviously I still have access to the web because I released a song as recent as May 26th (a Modest Mouse song no less). It’s in the forum rules that in order to gain permission to work on a song from someone’s else’s WIP list, you must first contact the person either to confirm they wish to complete the song on their own or to suggest a possible collaboration.

 

I was already completely ready to chalk this up to an accident. According to him, Beard obviously just didn’t see the song on my list. I’m not mad at him. Sure I’m a little mad at the situation itself, but I’ll still allow him to keep his version up, at least until I ever finish my version (it’ll obviously be lower priority now). But to suggest that it would be ok for him to see that I had a song on my list and deliberately disregard the time and effort I’ve spent working on the song is absolutely disrespectful. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been in limbo. You aren’t a charter, so you clearly don’t understand the amount of work that goes into making each individual song. Hell even Beard mostly just does conversions, which is nowhere near as much effort as starting from the beginning of the process (not that I’m ragging on Beard, he’s a stud). It’s all about common courtesy. If you see someone has a song on their WIP list that you want to work on, send a quick PM to that person first to ask permission.

Again, all I have to say is I legitimately didn’t see the Gravity chart in his WIP. It’s my fault as I stated from the beginning.
