I’m surprised I haven’t seen this or any Ayreon requested before, so thought I’d throw it out there that I would love to play them, particularly anything from The Source Album. I also play drums, so this request thread would include that, but anything is good

    Info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Source_(Ayreon_album)

This is a prequel, story-wise, to their album 01011001.

    Official stream: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDp_PtuyOwCa_N556UPC1-Eycg4LJohQf

Tracks I think are specifically a good fit for a wider audience for Rock Band:

    • Everybody Dies
    • Run! Apocalypse! Run!
    • Star of Sirrah *

    Other songs I like most:

    • The Day That The World Breaks Down
    • Sea of Machines
    • All That Was **
    • Condemned To Live
    • Aquatic Race
    • Deathcry of A Race
    • Planet Y Is Alive!

    * The Official Lyric Video is a slightly shortened version of the song. It is 7:03 long on the album.

** This is softer, but I love the song.

For vocals, there are foreseeable difficulties with 11 vocalists throughout the album and all 11 appearing on the first track, The Day The World Breaks Down. Well, maybe, I haven’t ever charted vocals or know how that would look, but it is more than a typical harmonies likely is. It has 2 female and 9 male singers. Notable ones that I knew of before include:

    • Floor Jansen from Nightwish
    • James LaBrie from Dream Theater
    • Russell Allen from Symphony X
    • Tommy Karevik from Kamelot
    • Simone Simons from Epica
    • Tommy Rodgers from Between the Buried and Me

As a side note for other Ayreon songs/albums… I have not been able to get into them after listening to The Source… I’m not sure if this album is that good or the others aren’t that good. Some tracks on other albums I do like, like Day 2: Isolation and The Age of Shadows. I need to try listening to them again.

If you listened to the Source first, it’s because you spoiled yourself by listening his most recent effort before listening to anything else. The project also has been around for a long time, so Arjen has had plenty of time to perfect his art.

I would say give the albums another go. Although all the stories connect together, a good way to approach a discography is to think that each album stands on their own in some way. (Unless it’s patently bad)

*cough* Human Equation & The Source are in the works *cough* guitar only but it will do for now*

But yeah, Human Equation is really good, and I agree with nsw, but Theory of Everything blew my mind, and The Source continued that feeling.

Theory is a stand alone album and has nothing to do with the actual “Ayreon/Planet Y/Forever” story. Plus, The Source is very guitar and riff heavy, making that album Prog Metal in a way, with most of the older stuff is a mix of everything.

That binary vocal solo doe. <3

OH, and the other 5 vocalists on The Source are:

Nils K. Rue from Pagan’s Mind

        Tobias Sammet from Edguy/Avantasia

        Hansi Kursch from Blind Guardian

        Michael Eriksen from Circus Maximus

AND THE VOCAL GOD, Mike Mills from Toehider (also plays “The Father” on Theory of Everything).

        &

On “Star of Sirrah”, there’s a KILLER solo by Paul Gilbert!

        *prognerdiness is over 9000*

Never heard of this project before but thanks for posting it – I really like Run! Apocalypse! Run!, a lot more to listen to

Yeah, that probably wasn’t great to start with it, but it was the first that even got me into Ayreon. I remember a year or two ago I heard some songs from them and never caught on to me… Maybe just not the right songs, too.

Could make for a rare occasion that I’d play guitar
