Is there any way to preview the Autogeneration Themes in Magma, or any description of what each one would come out looking like? Or would the only way be trial and error by seeing them yourself in game?
I’ve avoided most of them simply because they are named by genres that I do not normally chart. But I feel like the genres I work with could look good on certain themes if I knew what they actually came out looking like.
If nobody can help with the above, could somebody at least explain what “Default” is? Would that be a venue theme, or would it be one of the ones with an interesting background (similar to Synth Pop)?

The best way to check it would pretty much be to just test it ingame yourself (be sure to have practice sections charted for it to work properly).

That gives you a good example of the post processing. The themes are used by MagmaCompiler to create a VENUE track based on the instruments present in the MIDI, the EVENTS track, and the settings you choose in Magma.
There is no video showing you what each theme does, and i’m pretty sure it’s sort of randomized so when doing the same song twice with the same preset you won’t get the same exact venue created.
But if you want to get a rough idea of what each theme shoots for, you can actually look at them using Notepad++ or a similar program. Go to the Magma folder, then themes folder, and open any of the .rbtheme files. You’ll see the code in plain text, and you can see which kind of cameras and post processing they use.
In the end, the best you can do is have Magma autogenerate a venue for you based on the EVENTS track (the more detailed your practice sessions are named the better) and then manually edit that VENUE track in REAPER to make it better.
September 2, 2014 at 3:37 pm #428464Do the themes/genres have any effect on the characters’ animations? I’ve noticed Metal songs tend to have fist-pumping male vocalists, and female vocalists spend the majority of Nu-Metal songs doing the “windmill.” I’ve never been able to tell if the animations are genre-specific or if it just comes down to [mellow/play/intense] at [slow/medium/fast].

Metal and Nu-Metal have those animations you mentioned, where [play] makes them fist pump/arm windmill a lot. If you have a Metal song and you wish to avoid that from happening, put the singer in [mellow] or [intense] and their animations should be more neutral and/or varied. This is especially important if you chart a Power Ballad or something similar and label it as Metal (Hair) to avoid a very silly stage show ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />
Animation speed settings in Magma seems to also have some effect on which animation pools get used too, though I don’t know the specifics there.
