What is the best way to edit a pre-existing custom song? So far on my own I have figured out that you can use C3 Con Tools to extract the midi and mogg files from any CON, and use these with reaper. Before I begin editing many songs though I wanted to first make sure this is the right process for editing songs.

Additionally, while attempting to reduce an existing 2x bass pedal drums only custom to a 1x version using this process I ran into a magma error. When I import the existing custom’s midi into reaper to get the tempo map and the notes, I drop it onto a fresh track then copy the notes onto the PART DRUMS track from the C3 template. But the imported midi has a default track name of “PART DRUMS – [name of song]”, which seems to be confusing magma. I get an error when testing my completed midi about having two PART DRUMS tracks, despite the fact that I tried deleting, renaming and everything else with the imported midi. I made sure to export ONLY the part drums, venue, event and beat tracks and none of them have any midi tracks hiding underneath so I’m not sure what exactly is causing the error which is why I’m assuming it’s because of the imported midi’s file name. Am I going about this totally ass backwards?

That error of an extra generated name is caused by using the newest version of Reaper.

I recommend downloading the 4.22 version, as that is the version most C3 authors use and seems to be the most stable one for Rock Band charting.

Here’s the link for downloading old versions: http://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php

I don’t know how you managed to do that but your PART DRUMS track has all the text events from the other tracks, including VENUE and EVENTS.

        I am using Reaper 4.22.

Would the text events end up in the wrong place because I used Ctrl + A to select the notes from the imported midi before copying them onto the template track?

It still wouldn’t explain that, since you would only copy all notes from PART DRUMS of the customs and copy them on PART DRUMS in the template. To copy those text events you need to open PART KEYS, VENUE, EVENTS, etc. and copy them over to drums, which obviously you shouldn’t do.

Ok I think I realize the problem then. I imported the midi as a single track instead of multiple tracks. I didn’t think it would matter in a single instrument custom, assuming there would only be one track in the midi.

Of course if you know who authored it originally, ask them for their rpp file. Saves an awful lot of trouble.

            Right, that would be it.

Now I’m getting another magma error on a completely different project (I didn’t want to start a new thread). Magma is telling me that my play event in all three of my instrument tracks is less than 2 beats from the beginning. My play events are at the beginning of the music and notes, where I thought they were supposed to be. Where does it want me to put them?

And your music and notes are where?

              #426447

Music and notes start on measure 4, which is where I put the play events.

                What about the BEAT track?

                #426454

As per your pdf tutorial the only thing in my beat track is a note one beat before the end event

It’s very badly worded, sorry, I need to fix that. You need to delete all markers right up to the [end] event but starting from the last one. In other words, you need all your beat notes laid out right until the [end] event.

                  #426456

So basically there shouldn’t be any beat markers between the penultimate beat and the end event beat? (ie end event on measure 90.1, last beat marker on 89.4 and then beat markers all the way from 89.4 back to 1.1)
