I have a lot of experience with authoring, going back to the days of Guitar Hero 2 and the original Frets on Fire…
That being said, I’ve never been one to author a bass track. So my question is, is there a good way to do this accurately? Often times the bass track is hard to hear behind everything else. Are there headphones that are good for this or another way I’m not thinking of?

What I do, is I go on youtube to try and find (song) bass only/master. If nothing comes up I look up (song) bass cover.
February 13, 2017 at 11:02 pm #481370Transposing up the entire song with REAPER’s JS plugin often helps a lot. You can also try EQ. Google for sweep EQ for plenty of good tutorials on that. If a good 4.0 or 5.1 mix exists, that often helps. By properly EQ’ing the LFE channel, you can often recover a very good sounding version of the bass guitar, often with a bit of drums mixed in.
February 14, 2017 at 12:09 am #481374On the music track, use VST: ReaPitch and Shift the octave up 1 octave. This will often make the pitches more discernible. I usually use it in combination with VST: ReaEQ to bump up the Bass too. You still need to use some judgement to discern what is bass and what is drums. And it is not foolproof so make sure you go back over it again without the filters to make sure it still sounds right.
February 14, 2017 at 2:09 am #481385you can use ReaEQ and ReaFir to boost the bass a little. You can also try switching the master track to mono instead of stereo and see if that makes it more audible.
Heres a ReaEQ tutorial –
also after authoring bass dont forget to reset your audio back to normal (unless you want the songs bass boosted just a tad bit dont overdo it), if you boost the bass alot you will notice the song does not sound very good.
unfortunely in some songs no matter how much you bass boost the bass guitar still is hard to hear, if your unsure on some parts in alot of rock music the bass and guitar will sync up and play their same respective notes.
