I was using gear that’s not really meant to be used for fast action, specially the camera.
I used a Canon 6D (which is really meant more for portrait work), with a Sigma 150-600mm lens on a monopod.
I might be going to the Daytona Sprint Shootout in October, and then I would be going with a 1Dx body (sports pro body) – that might be even better results. We’ll see.
The track was nice, bigger than I thought but perhaps normal sized if you’re using to watching car races. It was cool how close we could walk around the cars and check them out before the races started. I had only telephoto lenses with me so I didn’t take any photos of the cars while I was checking them out.
Sorry I’m late getting back to the thread….damn inconsiderate Seahawk fans….they start into a conversation, then just rudely leave when a game starts…. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />
For not having the gear you would have preferred for these type of shots, I think they came out really, really good.
It can be tricky to get good shots when these bad boys get up to speed.
If you do get the opportunity to do the Shootout, those pics will be pretty interesting to see as well.
Yeah, wandering around the paddock area is a cool thing….getting up close to the cars and B.S.ing with crews and drivers is a blast. We came close to rubbing shoulders with Mario Andretti (literally,we were walking one way and he was walking the other way and it was so crowded and packed at that event.
I even had a brief 30 second conversation with Walter Payton in the late 90’s (several years after he retired from the NFL). Idiot me, I didn’t even realize who I was talking to (I kept thinking to myself, I know this man from somewhere, but don’t know how) I was thinking ‘Racing’ not ‘Football’ (if he was at least wearing a Bears hat or something, I would have made the connection) and it wasn’t until later that I discovered that Payton was partner/owner at Payton-Coyne Racing. I didn’t know that the ‘Payton’ in Payton-Coyne was in fact, the late, great Walter Payton or that he even liked motorsports.
God, I’m such a dumb-ass sometimes. Ok….that was one (of many) of my life experience ‘minor fails’. Anyone done anything similar they’d care to share, so I wont feel so stupid? LOL
