So even though I’ve lived in South Florida for 16 years, I’ve never been to the Homestead-Miami Speedway…until yesterday. Went with my parents for some bonding time, and we got rained out! Visited my sister, who lives nearby, and by 4pm it cleared out, so we went back. I managed to catch one last race, about 45 minutes worth.
I figured some of you might enjoy these as I’ve seen comments about NASCAR interest before. Here are my favorite 15, I uploaded some 70+ photos to my Facebook page, I can link that if there is an interest.
All the photos are organized by car number, not by my preference or even shooting order.
September 11, 2016 at 6:24 pm #474788Thanks for posting, I like things to do with that.. Watch F1 regularly both live and classic races
September 11, 2016 at 6:27 pm #474789Sexy shots you got going on there, Nemo.
The wife and I are big fans of open wheel racing…. IRL, Formula 1, Indy Lights.
We’ve been to the track out here at Seattle International(not for open wheel though) and Portland and hopefully one of these days we’ll make it up north to Vancouver B.C. We love the road courses as opposed to the ovals.
What was your photo gear setup and what were your first impressions of the track?
Oooh, gotta go….almost HAWKTIME BABY!
September 11, 2016 at 7:00 pm #474791What was your photo gear setup and what were your first impressions of the track?
I was using gear that’s not really meant to be used for fast action, specially the camera.
I used a Canon 6D (which is really meant more for portrait work), with a Sigma 150-600mm lens on a monopod.
I might be going to the Daytona Sprint Shootout in October, and then I would be going with a 1Dx body (sports pro body) – that might be even better results. We’ll see.
The track was nice, bigger than I thought but perhaps normal sized if you’re using to watching car races. It was cool how close we could walk around the cars and check them out before the races started. I had only telephoto lenses with me so I didn’t take any photos of the cars while I was checking them out.
September 11, 2016 at 9:06 pm #474795Are these all from the same race? I can’t imagine a race type where a Volkswagen would go up against a Lamborghini.
September 11, 2016 at 9:08 pm #474797Yep, all from one race. I think it was more of a qualifying round, because I also noted as you did the disparity in cars there. But I don’t know enough about this. I just went to take photos of cool cars
September 11, 2016 at 9:21 pm #474799Are there spectator-uploaded photos on the speedway’s website or Facebook page? I’m sure they’d really enjoy these photos.
September 11, 2016 at 9:50 pm #474802Gotta look into it. Brief look earlier didn’t seem to have them. I tagged them in the photos but they haven’t commented or reached out.
September 11, 2016 at 10:06 pm #474803While I’m more into F1 races, I still gotta say you did an amazing work on these shots! To be honest, they look like screenshots from the next Gran Turismo game.

September 12, 2016 at 12:35 am #474812Oh trust me, I would love to see a Ford GT in person. Only seen the older models down here, rarely, and never in a situation where I can photograph it well.
September 12, 2016 at 12:39 am #474813I’m actually kinda surprised. I’ve noticed in the coastal states (particularly Florida and California) you see those kinda of cars all the time. Here in Colorado it’s mostly Subaru Outbacks and Ford F-150s. I did actually see a DeLorean once but sadly it was on a backroad highway and I couldn’t snap a picture of it…
September 12, 2016 at 1:12 am #474814You’re right, there’s tons of supercars here. I see Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Aston Martin (some of them), Bugatti, Tesla, Porsche, Range Rover, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Maybach, Lotus, Nissan R35 (Skyline) and the more exotic BMWs (including the i8) regularly. But Ford GT, Porsche GT, NSX, Supra, Viper are rare. I may have seen a Noble on the streets once, maybe. I keep an eye out for exotic cars I can’t afford :-p So I’ll let you know when I see a 2017 Ford GT.
September 12, 2016 at 1:28 am #474815Interesting. I see Supras here frequently. Usually the ones “upgraded” by teens/early 20-somethings. You know, no real upgrades. Just a bass-heavy sound system, clear taillights, loudness-enhancing tailpipe, stock spoiler. Bumper/window stickers from various aftermarket parts manufacturers. The poor Integras are subjected to it too.
I’ve actually been seeing more Ferraris recently. There was one that looked like a discount LaFerrari but I’m not too in-depth on Ferrari’s models. Did see a mid-2000s Ford GT once. If I can find a GT40 with the yellow with black stripes paint job, I’ll be very happy.
