I stumbled upon this guys video on youtube where he uses a microamp to split the audio. Any experience with this or any alternatives you guys might suggest?
January 2, 2015 at 3:11 pm #435554YES! Been doing this for 5-6 years now. I truly believe this is the best way to play the game. I even have a PA style speakers and subs and everyone prefers the headphones.
Get a headphone splitter (link below) and some decent cans and you’ll find its better experience for everyone.

January 2, 2015 at 6:12 pm #435568drummer – Audio Technica ath-m50
bass – beyerdynamic dt 770
vox/guitar – beyerdynamic dt 990 (open) vocalist prefers
extras – grado sr80i, sennheiser 598
I usually amp it before the splitter for the high impedance 990 and 770 with the fiio e11. I used to EQ it too but found it too time consuming to dial it in just right so opted to remove it.
Also looking to add a pearl thumper for the Roland td-11kv drum set to add the feel of the missing subwoofers impact.
January 2, 2015 at 6:20 pm #435569if going this route make sure to either buy low impedance headphones or make sure to amp the signal. when using the behringer headphone amp there tends to be added noise/hiss when upping the gain so I prefer to amp it before the splitter.
kind of a shame to have over 5K dumped into speakers and subs and we all prefer headphones….
January 3, 2015 at 1:14 pm #435614Sorry for being so ignorant in this field but I would love to play the drums with headphones but both my TV and 5.1 receiver don’t have a headphone jack. Please guide. Thanks
January 3, 2015 at 5:22 pm #435617well there are a lot of options but would need to know a little more a your setup.
How do you have your Xbox setup?
Are you using hdmi to the television or does it go to the receiver first?
Option1
If you’re using hdmi to your receiver hopefully you have an pair of rca outs and you can use an RCA to 3.5 mm female jack and plug your headphones straight out
Option2
This is how I have mine set up because my receiver phone jack’s impedance is too low for my headphones. I use the rca out from the Xbox and go straight to my headphone amp via the cable below. Then to my headphone splitter.

I use some rca couplers to connect the male rca’s together
Tell me more about your setup and we can go from there

January 3, 2015 at 8:06 pm #435623Sorry for being so ignorant in this field but I would love to play the drums with headphones but both my TV and 5.1 receiver don’t have a headphone jack. Please guide. ThanksI’ve never seen a receiver without a 1/4″ headphone jack on the front.
The headphones that plug into a PC or Ipod have a 1/8″ jack so you usually need a 1/8″ to 1/4″ adapter unless your headphones already come with one.
I’ve also never seen a TV without a 1/8″ headphone jack but if you have a receiver you should be using that directly.
Take a picture of the front and back of your receiver and show us what your working with. Or gives us the make and model of receiver / TV.
Xbox hdmi to Tv and tv digital audio to Vizio 5.1edit: You don’t actually have a receiver, just glorified speakers. Check your TV for a headphone out jack (usually 1/8″ TRS) or RCA (red/white) out.
If it has the RCA out you’ll need a RCA to 1/4″ female adapter.
If your headhpones you have are 1/8″ then you need this adapter that most headphones come with anyways.
If you want something more dedicated to headphones you’ll want to either
1) Pick up a good surround sound receiver then you would plug the Xbox into the receiver [HDMI IN] and then have the receiver [HDMI OUT] plug into the speakers [HDMI IN] and then the speakers [HDMI OUT] plug into the TV [HDMI IN]. You’ll have a dedicated speaker outlet on the front of the receiver and dedicated speaker channels if you ever wanted to upgrade to a custom speaker setup. This setup would also take care of multiple device switching however since your “glorified speakers” already seem to meet your needs then I recommend option #2 since it would be cheaper.
2) Pick up a good headphone amp like the Shiit Magni. You would then plug the RCA cables from the Xbox into the headphone amp and have a dedicated outlet for the headphones. You would also have the HDMI cable left as it is but mute the sound bar / TV.
If you had multiple devices that connected to the TV then you could just use the TV’s RCA out that would plug into the headphone amp and then you would have headphone sounds for any device you switched to on the TV.
January 3, 2015 at 10:22 pm #435625You are correct (my bad), I have a Vizio soundbar not a receiver and a Samsung 6350 LED TV. Thanks for your info.
