as the title states. i left this comment on another authors custom. just wanna know if im out of line or just being a dick

I’m surprised no one hasn’t said anything yet (prolly dont wanna look like an asshole)

but your customs need alot of work ….

tempo mapping is completely non exsistent

drums dont even resemble whats actually being played

    guitars and bass are wrong….

and this is like that on every song you’ve released so far…. i went thru all of em. [except vocal only songs]

i get it your new and dont know quite what to do. and thats fine.

authoring is an art-form and is not meant for everyone.

it takes ALOT of time and UNDERSTANDING to make some of the best customs youve seen around here.

so for starters, i would tell you this. before you release any customs or make any more customs

learn how to properly tempo map/beat sync. this is the biggest first step and honestly the most important. theres tutorials on this provided by this site. as well as youtube vids. you can also try to do this in other programs as well but really try to understand this practice before you do anything.

2.learn how to read music. most times you can go to ultimate guitar get a gp5 file convert to midi. then fl studio it of transfer it to reaper. this is the most fundamental and in most cases accurate way to figure out whats being played. not all songs will have this, not all songs will be correct. most times you can find the sheet music/tab for it. you need to understand the notes being played so you can accurately chart that into your song. otherwise youll be lost…and will be completely incorrect.

if you can learn the above things i mentioned and perfect it everything else will fall into place.

the reason why this site survives and has quite a big user base is the quality of the customs supplied by the authors here.

Us authors pride ourselves on making quality customs for players to enjoy. nothing beats the feeling of having people playing and loving the songs you create and makes a fantastic place for everyone to come together over music.

none of us here would sacrifice that quality. and we kinda expect other authors here to do the same.

i know this seems harsh and i really do mean well. but please listen to what im saying. learn, improve.

and most people can tell a quality custom over one that is not. and users will simply just not download. or even leave feedback

I don’t think you’re being elitist, per se, but I think what bothers me the most is this line: “authoring is an art-form and is not meant for everyone.” I’m glad no one said that to me, because I believe anyone can do anything with enough understanding, resolve and knowledge (look up “being a jungle tiger”). I think, when you constructively criticize, you’re right on the money. I too hate when there is a bad tempo map and I wish there were a way to push those to the “B” pile until fixed to get to the “A” pile (and that goes for anything I do as well, I’m not saying I’m exempt).

However, I think you get a bit much with the site survival messaging. The site survives because people have a passion for this game and they want so desperately to be a part of it and to share what they created. Those that understand that, they truly do get better. Those that don’t, I hope they continue to get feedback like you’ve shown above so they have the opportunity to get better.

I have given very detailed feedback to many, but it does take some time to realize where you go wrong. Without the help of SO many here, I couldn’t have gotten as far (and I understand music AND play it). Authoring truly takes time. I don’t know how many/long the author in question has done this, so if they’ve been around over a year and still doing the same thing, a few PMs couldn’t hurt to let them know what is up and hopefully they are open to feedback. If not, I’d continue to critique well on the customs in question.

Just my two cents since you ask.

This is actually an interesting discussion.

For a site that anyone can easily upload to, and applies little-to-no testing/monitoring of content quality, the average quality of C3 customs is astoundingly high.

I don’t know really how the standard was created, but it seems self-sustaining to me. When I discovered the site, and saw the quality of work, my impression was “wow, I can’t really upload low-effort stuff here. If I want to upload, I have to make sure I live up to the standard of work here”. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

So yeah, those kind of customs, if they exist, harm the community. They lower the standard and might lead to more low quality work.

Especially in cases of bad tempo maps, I mean bad charting is something you can live with, at least to a certain extent. But if the track isn’t in sync, it’s just not playable. Nothing more frustrating than drumming and not missing anything, and lose your combo because the tempo map isn’t good.

Another, lesser damage is that songs are ‘taken’ by bad customs. If a song is in the DB, authors most likely won’t chart it again. If the custom isn’t good, that’s the song taken – and won’t be authored again by a better author.

Personally, I’ve encountered several customs (including extremely famous songs) that are out of sync in the DB. Playing along was impossible and it’s frustrating. But authors see them in the DB, assume they were done already and chart something else. There were even cases when I liked a song so much, I ended up downloading it and fixing the tempo map myself.

Thankfully, it isn’t a problem we encounter too often, most of the work is high quality. I do think it might be useful to have some kind of system to report and collect those cases. Maybe even as simple as a shared spreadsheet where people can report unplayable/out of sync/ridiculously bad charted songs. This way we can see, if a certain author is repeatedly making them, a mod can talk to him. And also, authors can know which songs are broken and volunteer to “fix” them, other than assume they’re good because they’re in the DB.

I agree with the poster above. Out of sync tempo maps make me delete the custom until it’s fixed or I just go without.

It might come across a bit harsh depending on the attitude on the receiving end, but I honestly prefer a critique that I can build on than an empty compliment.

You gave some legitimate advice because his absolute fundamentals seemed to be lacking.

If I were in his/her shoes, I think I’d feel a lot worse in the end having poured a lot of time and effort into something that people won’t play.

Like building a house with a bad foundation: people may say “oh that’s nice you made that”, but nobody’s gonna want to live in a crooked-ass house.

im not really good with words but i mean well.

obviously theres more than just one thing that makes this site great. and even though you may not agree with the survivability aspect cant really deny it tho either.

im not saying users who arent reputable or new cant post or anything like that at all.

in fact all i was asking was i am a dick for saying what im saying. ever since sheepqueen ive been thinking alot on this.

its actually steered me away from actually leaving comments and reporting issues i see in peoples customs….

what half of you dont know is i randomly go through the authors here and check their customs. hell ive left comments on authors songs who never even acknowledged the comment or even fixed the issues for that matter. (cough cough mariah carey)

the song in question for this is headquarter. no one has left any comments on this persons songs except farrottone which was about no profiting on links.

I was gunna leave a comment when i saw it but then thinking about sheepqueen im now holding my criticisms back. so after a rough month i came back and noticed this user has uploaded more customs which is fine, great awesome but the same issue i had with their first few releases is even obvious in their most recent customs.

hopefully no one takes any of this personal or like im trying to start a war. ive been told by my ex co-workers i come off as a complete dick. but they love me anyways. so yeah lol

also ive never ever put another author/member down. even if their custom wasnt that great. telling ppl not to waste their time or your custom sucks seems counter productive and i dont wanna be that kind of guy. i always felt my criticisms were always on point and correct. in which going forward i think i will just stick with errors i see in the song and call it a day. leave any other opinions to myself.

anyways guys thanks for listening to my nonsense haha

Since you asked, I would probably put your feedback in the ‘destructive’ class as opposed to ‘constructive’ based entirely on your tone and delivery.

Here is a 1 minute video with some really good pointers. Points 4 and 5 especially.

I think you make some solid points but if I was on the receiving end of this I would be very defensive and not really open to listening.

Keeping the content Canadian since 2017!

As someone who is still going through the learning curve I would say that I would rather know where I need to improve to make a good quality custom.

There’s always the chance that someone won’t take it well, but equally if no-one ever says anything then that doesn’t help anyone either.

I haven’t been shy in posting about tempo mapping and charting and I’ve received a lot of advice and direct help from some awesome authors, which I am very grateful for. I know for sure that what progress I have made would have been much slower without their help.

Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about that, it was clear the charter has little interest in the content itself.

                    #500114

My answer is “No, you aren’t being a prick.” I have asked what I thought were innocent questions on theinternet and was shocked by some of the responses I recieved. People can be harsh with their words but then again people are too sensitive as well. I give you mad respect for you’re material, but I respect anyone who attempts to chart and put it out there for the world to love or crap on. Either way if your charts, tempo maps, or you’ve got that weird half dead sound I’ve come across on some songs, it gets deleted as quickly as it was downloaded. Cheers to the chart masters and cheers to the people still learning, both have made my rockband playing experience more enjoyable every day.

                    #501123

I think you’re right Furiouss. Most of the time, the content isn’t great, and it’s a shame because most of the time we watch awesome charts and sometimes are a disgrace.
