LATEST UPDATE 2/26 – AMOUR MONTH DAY #26 all Who’s 2 pack

One of the most euphoric moments on Who’s Next got an assist from guitarist Joe Walsh. In 1970, the Who took Walsh’s hard-rock trio the James Gang on tour as an opening act. Perhaps as a way to say thanks, Walsh gave Townshend a Gretsch acoustic guitar, which he ended up playing on “Bargain” when the band recorded it. Townshend began work on the song while demo’ing material for his Lifehouse project. “On Lifehouse, it was a love song, but a song about a higher love, a love between disciple and master,” he said. What emerged was an open-hearted expression of Townshend’s devotion to Sufism, and religious faith in general: “How much of a bargain it would be even to love everything in order to be at one with God,” he said later. Over the course of several sessions with producer Glyn Johns at London’s Olympic Studio, “Bargain” grew into a triumphant anthem, with Moon delivering an explosive yet intricate performance many consider one of his finest and Daltrey sending the song’s powerful sentiment skyward. Daltrey said years later that Who’s Next songs like “Bargain” were “rooted inside of us.”

“Do You Miss Me Darlin’?” is a bit richer and deeper as a ballad with nice, whining guitar and soulful and dynamic vocals by Cummings, accompanied by rich harmonies between the verses and during the softer, piano driven mid-section. Burton does a fantastic job singing it and the harmonies are splendid. “What good is it if I can’t even bring it to ya right now? Talkin’ won’t do it and walkin’ won’t rush it along”. These lyrics could be referring to literally a bunch of subjects, but treated as a simple love song works the best.February 26, 2018 at 1:20 pm #495670February 27, 2018 at 9:17 am #495681LATEST UPDATE 2/27 – AMOUR MONTH DAY #27 Blood Sweat & Tears 3 pack

“More and More” was the B-side for the hit single “Spinning Wheel”. It has to be one of David Clayton Thomas’ greatest vocal performances (and that’s saying a lot). Bobby Colomby’s drumming on this track really makes the arrangement.

Originally a Motown hit for Brenda Holloway in 1967 (it reached number 39), this song was brought into the Blood, Sweat & Tears repertoire by group founder Al Kooper, shortly before he was asked to leave the band. However, this fabulous arrangement certainly has many Kooper arrangement trademarks, most notably the multiple keyboard fills (it really does sound like Kooper’s playing organ on this record), as well as the fabulous, laid-back coda. The song itself is a well-crafted soul-pop confection and would have been perfect for almost any vocal vehicle in the Motown stable, such as Diana Ross. BS&T, though, made the song their own, resulting in a number two record in spring of 1969.

Not afraid to cover the most unusual sources, BS&T manage to take Traffic’s “Smiling Phases” and transform it into a progressive jazz rock classic. Here, Clayton-Thomas makes an immediate impression, his gruff tones carrying the song to an altogether higher level.

There was a miscommunication with one of the charters for Smiling Phases so it will be delayed.

Springsteen wrote his first real anthem for exactly the purpose it ended up serving for decades: to blow the roof off concert venues of all shapes and sizes. The cadence and melody of the song appeared in a Van Morrison-style soul-folk tune called “Henry Boy,” which he performed solo acoustic in 1972. By the time he recorded “Rosalita” in early 1973, it was a surging, exultant, breathless rocker – not to mention, a totally true story: “Tell him this is his last chance/To get his daughter in a fine romance/Because the record company, Rosie, just gave me a big advance.” Springsteen later said, “The stuff I write is the stuff I live with. . . . They’re all true. Even the names – Big Balls Billy, Weak-Kneed Willie, all of ’em.” (Ex-girlfriend Diane Lozito is believed to have inspired the song, but Springsteen has never given any indication as to Rosie’s true identity.) The song’s romantic dilemma – Rosie’s dad has locked her away – is presented with fierce urgency, except for one lyric, which Springsteen later called “one of the most useful lines I’ve ever written”: “Someday we’ll look back on this and it will all seem funny.”

GUEST WRITE UP: Funk Meister Freud.
Got yourself a ‘sweet tooth’ for some rich and delightfully hot R&B/Soul, dripping with lots’a high spirited fun and then generously topped off with a good amount of pure, 100% vivacious funk?!?….. Well then get ready to throw it down, people!! Steveland’s the man with a plan and he’s about to bring it!Released and recorded in 1970, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” is a First Class Delivery Parcel guaranteed to knock your socks off. This was young Mr. Wonder’s first attempt at self producing his own material and it shows a very ambitious transition on his part to breaking the ‘Motown Mold’ and taking the helm in assertively expressing his own creative ‘genius in the making’. And I say ‘genius in the making’ because the work here was simply a precursor to the awesome magic that Stevie Wonder would give us for at least another 15 or so years after this single was released. Displaying a natural and mature self-assuredness, Wonder effortlessly sets up this groove with an exotic Eastern Indian sitar riff/sound that descends in scale, but pairs it with a Black Southern Baptist Church goer’s energized belting out of exclamations like ‘Hey’ and Oh,yeah babe!’ that seemingly call upon a higher power. On paper, the idea sounds rather unorthodox to the point of thinking ‘how the hell does THAT work?!?’ but lo’ and behold…..the ears don’t lie!Heck, just listening to those first few measures, you can tell that “ya better buckle up!! Young brutha’s gonna take you on one sweeeet ride!” Never mind that Motown’s best studio talent are also present to lay down an unforgettably soulful jam session, one that will forever be embedded into America’s pop music consciousness. I think most would agree, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” has it all! From fat horns in all the right places to a tight rhythm section that doesn’t let up, an all female vocal trio of gospel inspired ladies to back him and of course, the man’s own unique brand of ‘in your face’, high voltage, head rockin’, smilin’ and profilin’, Stevie Wonder!….Surely this is a song to be included in your Rockband parties! Enjoy!February 28, 2018 at 8:50 am #495712Oh wow Rosalita! Two Springsteen songs in one day! (and there might be a few more coming soon…)
And the Stevie Wonder song is great too. Thanks, brilliant release ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” />

(AJFOne23’s response to this post: )
Unfortunately, I have no such powers, but I can’t express how great this format/execution has been. Amazing work to all involved. I’ve made it a point to check in on this thread first thing each morning when I get to work, and it delivered every single morning and put me in a great mood for the rest of the day. Most of these songs will make it into future Rock Band party setlists for sure.
You guys rock.
