LATEST UPDATE 10/27 METAL MONTH DAY #27 Dimmu Borgir – Hyrbid Stigmata – The Apostasy

“Hybrid Stygmata: The Apostasy” is a beast of a song, beginning with an orchestra, and Shagrath screams out of nowhere commencing the headbanging. Catchy guitar riffs backed up by the orchestra. The song turns angelic when Vortex starts to sing with beautiful clean vocals during the bridge.

Eerie. Mystical. Hallucinatory. Numerous words have been used to describe “Blue Jay Way,” one of George Harrison’s Magical Mystery Tour contributions. A kind of sibling to “I Am the Walrus” with its eerie string arrangement, the track represents Harrison’s continued growth as a songwriter and his willingness to experiment with avant-garde structure and themes.
“Blue Jay Way” originated from a rather mundane situation. George Harrison and wife Pattie Boyd, Neil Aspinall, and Alexis Mardas were visiting California. They were staying at a rented house in the Hollywood hills on a street called — yes — “Blue Jay Way.” One day, Beatles publicist Derek Taylor was driving to meet them at the house, but had gotten lost in the Los Angeles canyon fog. Bored, Harrison jotted down his thoughts to ward off ennui and, frankly, stay awake.
“To keep myself awake, just as a joke to pass the time while I waited, I wrote a song about waiting for him in Blue Jay Way,” Harrison explained in 1968. “There was a little Hammond organ in the corner of this house which I hadn’t noticed until then … so I messed around on it and the song came.”
SPECIAL THANKS: Rocker1999 for tempo map and Orange Harrison for the audio remix.

Forged from the influences of two of history’s greatest bands, Beatallica is the world’s first live mash-up or “bash-up” band. This track hails from their first EP and was later re-recorded for a full album but this version will always be my favorite.

LATEST UPDATE 10/29 METAL MONTH DAY #29 Iron Maiden, Soundtrack 3 pack

Iron Maiden’s debut album begins with Prowler. A powerful opener, Prowler displays a ton of raw energy that the band carries throughout the album. With excellent melodic leads, a strong rhythm section from each of the bands members, and catchy, memorable vocals from Paul, Prowler is a great track, and a very clear indicative of what the band played at the time. Each musician can be heard at work very clearly, which displays the talents and potential of the band superbly. The lyrics are quite shallow, but Prowler is a fun song nonetheless.

Lion was a metal ‘80s hairband that rocked out from 1983 to 1989, and the band actually made their recording debut with this song specifically for the flick.

Now I can’t ignore what makes this tune so memorable in the franchise. It was of course made iconic by the unique dancing styles of off-beat actor Crispin Glover. Glover plays Jimmy Mortimer, one of the frisky youths who have come to Camp Crystal Lake to party despite his reputation for being a bit of a dweeb and all around “dead fuck.” Well, much to the surprise of his friend and tormenter Teddy Bear, Jimmy hits it off with one of the sultry twins they encounter and gets lucky. The question remains whether it was his slick moves to this Lion tune that sealed the deal, however, Glover revealed in interviews that this track was not what they actually recorded the scene to. His spastic twists and jerks were actually made on set to the blaring aggression of an AC/DC track, with Lion’s offering being added in post-production. Regardless, Glover’s dance improvisation provided both comic relief and further character depth to this dorky but loveable character…except to Jason naturally, who rewarded those slick moves with a cleaver to the face!

Alice Cooper enlisted a star-studded cast for synth-heavy monster mash “Feed My Frankenstein” — chief among them guitar whizzes Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. “I wanted this song to be a Frankenstein,” Cooper said in a 1991 interview with Meat magazine, “so I wanted the two best monster guitarists on it.” Other minions included bassist Nikki Sixx and Elvira herself. Although originally released on his 1991 album Hey Stoopid, nobody was really shouting “It’s alive!” until it was showcased in Wayne’s World the following year, going on to make history as the only single ever to crack the U.K. Top 30 with the lyric “lick my libido.” “Everywhere I go, people bow down and yell, ‘We are not worthy,'” Cooper told Kerrang! in 1992.

Awesome that you authored Prowler. Didn’t realize you were working on it. Also, the Friday the 13th pick is an amazing choice. I can never forget that scene when George Mcfly is dancing.

This was literally a last minute addition. While working on Love is a Lie it kept reminding me of Prowler so I checked and to my shock it hadn’t been done. Thanks to Echo we whipped it up in a day

LATEST UPDATE 10/30 METAL MONTH DAY #30 3 pack for the Devil

“Ave Satani” from the Omen film score is like a black mass. The refrain “Sanguis bibimus, corpus edimus, tolle corpus Satani” (ungrammatical Latin for, “We drink the blood, we eat the flesh, raise the body of Satan”) is used with alternating “Ave Satani!” and “Ave Versus Christus” (“Hail, Satan” and “Hail, Antichrist!”). The correct Latin would be “Sanguinem”, but I think they used the wrong word because it is easier to pronounce and works better in the lyrics. Jerry Goldsmith’s original version is an all time classic but this version it more appropriate for Rock Band with a full rock band accompanying the orchestra and choir.

A wonderful display of the group’s Folk side. Through perfectly timed intertwining guitar playing, and wonderful instrumental harmonizing, the group sets this piece apart from the rest. Not only does this ballad satisfy most instrumentally, but being a ballad, it tells a story. And quite a good. A story if told about a man running from his troubles, but trying to keep optimistic. His hopes of returning to his love are great, but his previous encounter with the Devil set him back mentally. Robert Hunter managed to write this number with very interesting imagery and various other poetic attributes. “Friend of the Devil” is a simply fantastic.

    COMING LATER TODAY!
Guns N’ Roses recorded their version of the Rolling Stones’ classic tune in 1994 which was featured in the closing credits of Neil Jordan’s film adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire and was included on their Greatest Hits album. This cover is noteworthy for causing an incident involving incoming guitarist, Paul “Huge” Tobias, that was partially responsible for guitarist Slash departing from the band in 1996. Slash has described the Guns N’ Roses version of the song as “the sound of the band breaking up”. Despite all the turmoil the end result is a powerful rendition like no other band could do.

Well it was bound to happen once in 31 days. Hopefully though the devil’s triad of songs will be complete before the day is through.
