October 6, 2017 at 7:11 am #491250LATEST UPDATE 10/6 METAL MONTH DAY #6 Voivod – Killing Technology
GUITAR: ghostbyob
BASS/VOCALS: spiralshadow123
When it comes to the fast-paced and volatile world of thrash metal, few bands have been as inventive and groundbreaking as Canada’s Voivod. Also one of my favourite metal bands, it is rather remarkable to hear them go from the relatively primitive speed metal of their early records to the more dissonant and experimental thrash of what I consider to be their best albums. Their biggest transition album would be their third record, ‘Killing Technology’. Although the first two albums were charming enough, ‘Killing Technology’ is where the Voivod I love really came alive. The title track is a very dark, cold, technical sci-fi thrash epic which has no lengths in its seven entirely brilliant minutes and is one of the most underrated songs of the group.
October 7, 2017 at 12:27 pm #491283This is a great song and very fun on guitar! Thanks!

VOCALS/GUITAR: Sygenysis
BASS: mrcoupdetat
“Avoid The Light” was included on the sountrack to the Dracula 2000 film. The song is very eclectic in sound and borrows song styles from all of Pantera’s catalog – ranging from chugging riffs and a sing along chorus from verses in spoken word along with an acoustic guitar.
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
PRO KEYS/STANDARD KEYS: Emotional Flight/MrPrezident
“Transylvanian Concubine” is the gothic vampire song that got Rasputina known. It was their first hit and was featured in a season 2 episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
GUITAR: Henk
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
“Dracula” opens with a very soft acoustic intro with some over-the-top sappies from Matt. A tad too passionate but fear not, because after a bit your ears are filled with Matt’s soaring voice and Jon’s fast hands. To be honest, what starts off as one of the lightest off the album turns into the heaviest. Great stuff.

October 8, 2017 at 8:41 am #491302LATEST UPDATE 10/8 METAL MONTH DAY #8 Death – Symbolic Full album
“Symbolic” is Death’s pinnacle and outstanding masterpiece. Chuck Schuldiner takes the complex songwriting from Individual Thought Patterns and sets it on the next level here. With a crystal clear production and powerful band sound, superbly engineered by producer Jim Morris, were Schuldiner’s ideas perfectly brought to record. The line-up was re-arranged with Kelly Conlon on bass and Bobby Koelble on guitar. Only drum-beast Gene Hoglan was recruited by Chuck Schuldiner on Symbolic from the last album. There are a couple obvious changes in Deaths sound with the release of Symbolic, one Chucks voice is in the higher register and is more of a scream/snarl type sound. Secondly the music is crisp and clear thanks to some great production. Some fans of older Death may not like these changes, but don’t worry it’s still damn heavy, but at the same time it’s probably the most accesible Death album…..While yet again at the same time being really progressive in a sense.GUITAR: Meander
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
“Symbolic” is up first, the song is mid-paced and rather long, but also technical and progressive. The music is what makes this, the guitar solos at the half-way mark are jaw dropping. And that reprisal of the thrashy opening riff around the 3:50, ooohhh….
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
GUITAR: Puppetz
“Zero Tolerance” the next song, a slow paced crusher with some more great solos. This song is also a fan favourite and that fact is well justiced, since the song is a melodic, powerful and well arranged smasher.
GUITAR: Angevil
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
“Empty Words” starts out with some type of eerie atmospheric sounds then comes crashing down. A great lead riff drives this song at first, Chucks vocals are great here, a classic Death song and sounds like it could have came from Human or ITP. And good god those solos just scream.
GUITAR: Froogzer
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
“Sacred Serenity” is another superb piece. The bass pounds out loud during pretty much the whole song, The little breakdown at about the 2 and a half mark that slams back into full force sounds awesome. While this isn’t a typical Death song, Chucks vocals sound great and it is just a fantastic progressive piece.
GUITAR: alevd93
VOCALS: Rocker1999
BASS: EchoOfMystery
“1,000 Eyes” speeds things back up and has some of the most impressive drumming I think I’ve ever heard, damn that guy can play! The melodic lead guitar chord in that song, which repeats throughout is simply haunting and I always get goosebumbs when they run together with the insane drumwork by Gene. Brilliant!
GUITAR: Sonata
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
“Without Judgement” keeps the pace up, some great riffs and what do you know some awesome solos drive this song. There’s a weird breakdown at about 3:00, you know what’s coming when you hear this, the song rips back to pace. The lyrics here are worth mentioning, Chuck has always been one of my favorite lyricists.
GUITAR: Puppetz
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
“Crystal Mountain” is pretty fast paced, technical riffs/solos and tempo changes it pretty much has it all. Some pretty awesome lyrics too, anytime I think about the band in general the line “Inside crystal mountain, evil takes its form” pops to mind. God, great song!
GUITAR: naginalJJ
BASS: EchoOfMystery
VOCALS: Rocker1999
“Misanthrope” is up next, one of the most progressive songs by Death. Complex, with simply stunning tempo changes and brilliant guitar work.
GUITAR: Henk
BASS/VOCALS: EchoOfMystery
DRUMS: Onyxite
“Perennial Quest” is the closer, and is the most experimental/progressive song Death ever done. Clocking in at over 8 minutes long, the song starts off with the line “The journey begins” that’s what this song is, a jorney. The song flows along quite smoothly the first time I heard it I remember thinking how it seemed more like 5 or 6 minutes as opposed to 8. The little accoustic sections may scare off the hardcore death metal guys, but they sound pretty mesmerizing with the guitar soloing over them.
October 8, 2017 at 6:20 pm #491310Hmm, is Crystal Mountain an changed version with a different ending? I’m used to a fadeout. But this version works better for RB!
Thanks for Symbolic, great album that works great for RB
October 8, 2017 at 10:29 pm #491319The 3 older relases (Symbolic, Crystal, and Zero) were fully upgraded top to bottom and any songs that faded I gave them proper endings.
October 9, 2017 at 8:57 am #491323LATEST UPDATE 10/9 METAL MONTH DAY #9 Slayer – Expendable Youth
GUITAR: Sygenysis
BASS: naginalJJ
VOCALS: Meta123
“Expendable Youth”, where a slower pace actually adds to the intensity of the song structure and makes it a hell of a heavyweight. It’s a breathtaking discourse on gang rivalries and their violent consequences. This is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head. The chorus has some super jazzy drums fills from Dave Lombardo showing his influence extends far from typical four on the floor metal.

GUITAR: ghostbyob
BASS: EchoOfMystery/Alternity
VENUE: SeptekkaA Wild Hare is based on a scene from “an animation classic released in 1942” – Bambi. The scene in question is one with Thumper, though I’m not sure which (I think it is one form near the start). Guitarist Ron Jarzombek spent hours transcribing the entire scene’s original orchestral score (including violins, violas, cellos, flutes, piccolos, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, harp, percussion/timpani and lightning effects) to music for guitar, drums and bass. Also transcribed was the dialogue of the hare (accurate down to pitch and timing, and including coughs, inarticulate noises and throat clearings). If there was no rhythm or chord apparent to be transcribed, they added something of their own until something popped up again. Watch the video in the link to see the song synced up with the film.GUITAR: Angevil
BASS/PRO BASS & GUITAR: Alternity
The Mad Data Race is a great opener, as it really showcases what’s coming in a nutshell. The quick tempo changes and lightning fast melody runs give it a very stop-start feel, which is representative of the computer theme hinted at in the title (which I think they went a bit far with on their second album, Ink Compatible, but that’s another story). Yes, it is very indulgent in terms of overt technicality, but it maintains it’s melody throughout, and never becomes just a mass of boring but skillful playing.October 11, 2017 at 7:12 am #491382LATEST UPDATE 10/11 METAL MONTH DAY #11 Obituary – Turned Inside Out
GUITAR: ghostbyob
BASS: naginalJJVOCALS: kuellerObituary’s second studio album from 1990, “Cause of Death” is truly without question an essential death metal masterpiece, and it’s also the best Obituary album ever. “Turned Inside Out” is just an all around wicked closer that features a variety of tempos, as well as fantastic solos, wicked riffs, and killer vocals.October 12, 2017 at 7:04 am #491410LATEST UPDATE 10/12 METAL MONTH DAY #12 Squirrel Nut Zippers/Nunslaughter
GUITAR/BASS: naginalJJ
VOCALS: kuellerIf Satan ever held auditions for a house band, Nunslaughter (that’s Nun Slaughter, not Nun’s Laughter!) would be in the top three finalists. The long running death metal act has dubbed their music as “Devil Metal” and it’s easy to see why. Their lyrics make Deicide look like Stryper in comparison, with song titles like “The Guts of Christ”, “Jesus is Doomed”, and “I Hate Christians” pretty much affirming where they stand in regards to the Church. One interesting thing about the band is the fact that they still use the old school death metal vocal style, not growling but instead using deep, harsh vocals that are actually easy to understand. This goes a long way in getting their message across and might even make them more accesible to those turned off by the usual death metal growls. The music itself is also old school death metal but with a nice thrash influence. It’s simple and primitive and that’s the beauty of it. “Raid the Convent” is the most well known song from their 2003 album Goat and a personal favorite of mine.GUITAR/BASS: EchoOfMystery
VOCALS: AtruejediPRO KEYS: MrPrezidentAfter raiding a convent and slaughtering nuns your next stop is obviously “Hell”, the gem that gave it’s album platinum status and blew up the band in 1997. This swing, gypsy tinged piece is concerned with the suffering one experiences in hell where “fire is applied to body” no matter how much fame or fortune you have.October 12, 2017 at 7:26 pm #491424AJ, Thanks for Hell song. Awesome song. I’ll give it a play as soon as I figure out how to get my snare working again on E kit. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_frown.gif” />
