November 13, 2016 at 7:21 am #477662The only Genesis custom that I have which is not full band is “It’s Yourself/Lost Endos/It’s Yourself(Reprise)”. Not sure if your working on it for pack 2. Nice work on the 1st pack thus far.

That would be up to NSW1-6. I’m down if he is. Thanks for the props!

GUITAR/BASS: nsw1-6
5 LANE KEYS: MrBurpler
A short, bombastic, and playful track from the 1972 LP The Grand Wazoo, “Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus” sounds like a second helping of “Peaches en Regalia.” Like “Peaches en Regalia,” it was released as a single (Bizarre, 1972), backed with the jazzy “Eat That Question.” George Duke gets a spotlight as a mad arpeggio-addicted pianist. The title is the name of the Funky Emperor in the story printed on the LP sleeve. He is the character holding the “mystery horn” in the cover artwork.November 21, 2016 at 2:52 am #477903RESERVED

GUITAR: nsw1-6
5 LANE KEYS: Bansheeflyer“One for the Vine” is Genesis’ most-impressive piece of music from its post-Peter Gabriel era. In ten minutes, it contains more musical ideas than the whole A Trick of the Tail album (or even Tony Banks first solo LP A Curious Feeling). The song is made of ten different musical segments, some appearing more than once (like the opening theme and the verse). Unlike “Supper’s Ready,” each segment is well-integrated into the song (instead of forming a suite), and the piece progresses naturally from one to the next, becoming one of the most complex songs Banks has ever written. The frequent mood and style changes lead the listener to believe twenty minutes (at least) have passed. The story tells of a man leaving his community because he doesn’t believe in its spiritual leader anymore, only to become the leader of another group of people. The lyrics make a full circle as a member of this second flock leaves in disbelief in the same way the hero first did.

5 LANE KEYS: MrBurplerOne of the very few heartfelt (as opposed to mocking) sentimental songs in Frank Zappa’s repertoire, “Village of the Sun” preserves places and names from his teenage years. Near Palmdale, CA, Sun Village is (was?) a small place near the desert — that’s why the wind can “take the paint off your car/And wreck your windshield too”: it carries tons of sand. Its medium tempo, catchy melody, harmless subject, and straightforward format would have made it a perfect hit single, but it was not released that way — a shame.“Echidna’s Arf (Of You),” along with “The Black Page, No. 1” and “Inca Roads,” is one of the best pieces from Frank Zappa’s “complex music” period (1973-1976). This instrumental piece was only performed with the 1973-1974 band as part of a sequence made of “Village of the Sun,” “Echidna’s Arf (Of You),” and “Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing.” The piece calls for complex melodic lines, frequent changes in time signatures and tempos, and fast-paced action involving all musicians, often playing in unison. Yet, the whole thing adapts to an approximate 4/4 frame, making it easier to digest than the next piece in the sequence.Unlike “Echidna’s Arf (Of You),” which among all the complex madness follows a roughly straightforward 4/4 rhythm, this piece is filled with stop-and-go nonsense and ever-shifting tempos and time signatures. The main portion of the piece, the theme-and-variations section, lasts about four minutes. It closes with a blistering drum solo followed by a funky guitar solo.November 28, 2016 at 6:44 pm #478161November 29, 2016 at 2:46 am #478194Had a lot of fun playing both Zappa and Genesis track. There’s a lot of time and care put into these tracks so I’m glad you not only enjoyed playing them but took the time to let me know:)
