Very nice song choices. Thank you.
November 9, 2016 at 6:23 am #477501For some reason I’ve had this running through my head all morning.
You’re not kidding. I was not expecting to see the election results that I woke up to. I’ll tone down my initial reaction to a baffled and disappointed: incredible.
On topic: great pack. Thanks for sharing these songs.
November 9, 2016 at 6:23 am #477502Apologies for the double post

November 11, 2016 at 9:25 pm #477598LATEST UPDATE 11/11 – Genesis Chronicles Celebration Pack Part 1
GUITAR/BASS/DRUMS: nsw1-6
5 LANE KEYS: ghostbyobPROKEYS/HARM VOX: AJFOne23Symphonic in essence (David Palmer included it on We Know What We Like: The Music of Genesis, even though it could be labeled as obscure), it is very peaceful and calls for Peter Gabriel to sing in his lowest register, something that contributes to give the song a special feel. The closing instrumental section was uplifting, but placed on the same record as “Watcher of the Skies,” “Get ‘Em Out by Friday,” and “Supper’s Ready,” it couldn’t make a strong impression.GUITAR/BASS/DRUMS: nsw1-6
5 LANE KEYS: iPodwithnomusicPROKEYS/HARM VOX: AJFOne23Many prog rock fans feared that Peter Gabriel’s departure from Genesis would mean a loss of the fanciful story-song lyrics that dressed up such Genesis favorites as “Return Of The Giant Hogweed” and “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe).” This fear proved to be unfounded because A Trick Of The Tail, the group’s first post-Gabriel outing, was full of colorful story-songs. The wittiest example was “Robbery Assault and Battery,” a wry observation on crime and the legal system set to a driving prog-rock backing. The darkly witty lyrics chronicle the adventures of a murderous crook who is able to commit mayhem without fear of reproach due to ineffectual police and a legal system that allows plenty of loopholes for aspiring felons. The music accentuates the dark humor of the lyrics by pairing them to an ironically sprightly melody that matches bouncy verse melodies to a chorus built on powerful ascending-note hooks. The Genesis recording of “Robbery Assault And Battery” dresses the song up in a lush arrangement that underpins the verses with ticklish electric piano riffs but adds crashing drumwork and powerful organ and electric guitar to the chorus. Phil Collins’ lead vocal borrows a page from Peter Gabriel’s book of vocal stylings by affecting a variety of cockney accents to bring the different characters to life in a vivid fashion. All these flourishes add up to a song that manages to be exciting and mordantly humorous all at once. “Robbery Assault And Battery” went on to enjoy a long life as a live favorite for Genesis and continues to be considered one of the group’s best post-Gabriel achievements.GUITAR/BASS/DRUMS/VOX: nsw1-6
5 LANE KEYS: ghostbyobPROKEYS/HARM VOX: AJFOne23“Down and Out”, actually addresses the pressure they felt to create more commercial music — tellingly, it’s one of the album’s more complex tracks. In 5/4 time, in chugs along with aheavy down beat before building to an uplifting and memourable chorus. The track also features some of Tony Banks’ best work on the album, both interms of chords and soloing.November 11, 2016 at 10:45 pm #477599Great first pack. Thank you.
November 12, 2016 at 5:32 am #477607You’re welcome. I actually had these planned for last year but the keys were not working out at the time. It’s sacrilegious to not have keys in a Genesis song so I’m glad I waited to get them right.
November 13, 2016 at 12:48 am #477646LATEST UPDATE 11/12 – Frank Zappa – “Inca Roads”
GUITAR/BASS: nsw1-6
5 LANE KEYS: Bansheeflyer
“Inca Roads” is one of Frank Zappa’s most cherished, covered, and appreciated pieces. It allied his ability to write a catchy song with his mastery of complex music forms, making it a favorite among progressive rock fans (who are not always kind for the man’s music) and virtuoso ensembles. The lyrics begin on a UFO theme: “Did a vehicle/Come from somewhere out there/Just to land in the Andes?,” referring to South American architectural structures some believed were landing sites for flying saucers. But quickly the song takes a dive into “life on the road.” The word “vehicle” is replaced by “booger-bear,” a title given to the band member who ended up with the ugliest groupie the previous night (which makes it the contrary of “Bwana Dik”). The name of drummer Chester Thompson comes up in regards to that, as it will again under similar circumstances in “Florentine Pogen.” The song ends with a tutti “On Ruth!,” a wink at percussionist Ruth Underwood’s amazing marimba fireworks in the finale. -
