Please see the screenshot, it’s a leisurely pace at about 110bpm, but it has a nice stilted swing/swagger I really like…partly due to a repeating 32nd note/beat snare strike in between the tempo map points in the image below; frustratingly not aligning up in the center point/line. You can see the hit shortly after the 26.3.00 line in the image below.
How do you guys handle laying the notes down for such a drum hit? Do you do it AS a 32nd note (16th note-long of course), or do you lay the note down in the center BEFORE the beat occurs in the audio anyways?
What makes for the best playing experience in these cases? it’s not a one off note, it repeats like this regularly… Thanks.

August 21, 2020 at 5:42 am #513647I’m about to assume a lot of things here because I have NO idea past the very small section of a screenshot. Assuming you have a 4/4 song here, you need to switch your grid from Straight to Swing. This should align your grid to where the notes will be placed in the spots that are consistent throughout. Again, if it’s truly swing beat. Sometimes it’s confused with a Triplet grid so just try those options out and use accordingly.

Thanks but I’m pretty new to this and I don’t know how to, “switch your grid from Straight to Swing.” to try it in Reaper 4.22.
August 21, 2020 at 6:29 am #513649When you’re viewing the piano roll/midi for an instrument, you’ll see this dropdown menu that says “Straight” by default at the bottom of your window:
Click it and those other options show up.

August 21, 2020 at 6:55 am #513651Oh wow I never even noticed that…but I just started doing this, so I’m learning something new every-time I open Reaper, LOL

If so, then you’d want to adjust your tempo map to line up the hit at x.3.00. Basically, subdivide the tempo up within the measure. There are ways to do it if you know how; people reference a post I made a while ago with a different method for something just like this. Otherwise, you can always just manually do the map at those 2-4 markers depending how you do it.
I subdivide measures all the time if the drummer isn’t being consistent.
August 22, 2020 at 3:24 am #513665If something is truely swung, honestly go for the triplet option and not the swung one. Most swung songs will use this and it saves having to swap all the time, plus reaper will make the note lengths all weird if you use the swing option.
Also almost all hip-hop is swung 16ths so yeah do the same for that too (although swung 16ths is barely noticeable to most people)
If you use Pro Keys 2 Hands, you a cheater, just saying
August 22, 2020 at 7:42 pm #513672Good advice guys…I’ll keep working with it as needed. I finished notes and it looks solid. I’ll have to test it.
