A few questions about folders and files on PS3

Hey there!
Apologies if this info is all out there, I haven’t done too much looking into the various differences between how this all works on different systems. I have a PS3, so I followed those instructions and it all works fine, so if none is this is doable, I’d still be over the moon with everything anyway, I’m just curious. I suppose I could just also go and try these things, but I figured I’d ask before messing anything up.
While flipping through some video about various facets of the C3ConTools, it was mentioned about xbox being able to just make your own packs and everything, and I think he said something about fewer (though bigger) packs would load faster than vice versa. That got me thinking about the folder architecture of my library: between all the legit DLC’s I have installed, I have nearly 500 folders that it scans through during it’s initial load. It’s only a couple of minutes, but still, got me thinking. Here’s what I’m wondering:
On PS3 (due to whatever foibles of the system), does everything all have to go into that one specific “free pack”/”HMX0756” folder? I understand there’s a limit to the number of songs that a single dta file can handle, on PS3, does that effectively make that one file’s limit into the whole system’s limit, because you can only insert via that one directory?
What about official DLC folders? Can I delete single songs from official DLC packs, if I modify the songs.dta accordingly?
Can I similarly merge songs from official DLC “packs” (singles, in actuality), if I again just make sure to properly merge their songs.dta files? (With, in this case, I’m thinking that “PS3DTAMerger.bat” that I got from the BeatlesRB DLC instructions on discord)
Anyway, this whole shit is amazing. You guys are all mind-blowing. I sorta fell out of guitar hero and rock band shortly after RB1 was released, so to return to it now and find that some major dream-come-true stuff has been taking place for the past decade here, is pretty fantastic. I’m consistently floored by both the quality and sheer quantity of work that so many of you put out. Thanks a lot!
August 6, 2020 at 9:21 pm #513341Hi, the limit to songs with RB3 has to do with the entire game, not just a DTA, I am unsure what would happen if you tried to put dlc in other folders, but I think it would cause many errors and red flags. But even if it did work, there is no point because the song limit is still the same.
Also nice to see more PS3 players, while a few songs don’t work here and there for us, we have the ability to still play online, so if you are ever interested in playing, hit me up and we could sort out a time

August 6, 2020 at 10:04 pm #513343The way custom songs are setup to work on PS3 uses the same folder because then we only have to deal with the one encryption key. Every HMX/RBN folders uses their own key so if you’d want to use another folder you would need to change information in a txt file in C3 CON Tools to match that folder and then re-convert to PS3 so that the midi file has the correct key for the wanted folder, it’s a pain to do, and besides having everything in one folder makes it load much faster, the only con to doing this is finding problematic songs is a pain when you have thousands of entries in the DTA file.
You cannot move files from folder to folder without re-encrypting the midi file with the correct key. If you do it and don’t change the key, the game will not be able to load the midi file and therefore just shoot out an error and then get back to the song list.

Please take my advice with a grain of salt since my understanding is limited.
I think that loading songs indeed is slower the more DTA files you have, and this is why PS3 is actually faster than XBOX when loading customs, since we merge all of them into a single DTA (XBOX users can pack customs together to speed it up, we can’t but also don’t need to).
In theory if you could move all the DLC from one of their original folders into the customs folder and merge the two DTA files, you would have one less DTA to load for each DLC folder moved, and therefore faster loading times. Just moving files and merging DTAs wouldn’t work because the PS3 wants all files encrypted and the encryption is “locked” to a folder, so you would need to decrypt and re-encrypt.
But I think the problem is we probably don’t have a tool for decrypting, because obviously that could be used for piracy, even if I think your own case of simply moving your legitimate files around would be fair use.
August 7, 2020 at 12:49 pm #513365There are tools to decrypt and encrypt if you search for PS3 tools around the web, but I think it would be simpler to just re-convert from xbox with the new info in the klic.txt file in C3 CON Tools rather than going through the trouble of decrypting and re-encrypting these midi files manually, if you were to go this route.
