I know that we use reaper to create customs and Im fairly familiar with it, but my friend wanted to start making customs and I wanted a way to collaborate with him to show him the ropes (preferably in real time).

Is it possible to use another DAW such as ohmstudio, where we can collaborate on the same project in real time? If I created my tracks in the same format as the template, would that work?

And lastly, Ive never tried moving across DAWs (although I used to use fl studio for my music), but would vst plug-ins work across DAWs?

    Thanks,

Theoretically any DAW that supports MIDI editing and exporting can be used to create customs. All of the tools originally created by Harmonix and further developed by C3 are tailored to REAPER, so that’s going to be your and your friend’s best bet for support when there are questions. But again, it is possible.

To go between DAW’s, you would need to share exported MIDIs and raw audio files (WAVs, FLACs, etc.). Sharing DAW project files would not work, unless a particular pair of DAW’s happens to have support for each other’s file formats (very unlikely). This would not be an impossible or even difficult task, but keep in mind MIDIs do not store all info that might be relevant to a given project, particularly plug-ins and their configurations. Ultimately all Magma cares about is in a MIDI file, so collaboration can be done, but potentially it’s more effort in the long run than your friend learning REAPER now.

VST plug-ins are meant to be compatible with any DAW that supports VST’s, yes. Remember that certain other helpful tools like CAT are not plug-ins per-se but Python scripts that REAPER provides an engine for, and those are not so easily moved to another DAW.
