Hello!
I’ve known about customs for years and finally took the plunge last week.
I am absolutely addicted!
I wanted to know what I can do to help out with charts already made.
I’ve noticed some glaring chart notation errors/sync issues that I would like to assist with touching up or at least pointing out.
I also wanted to know if requests were appropriate and where to direct them.
Is there a way to adjust the volume of overly loud/quiet tracks individually?
Really want to get involved and help any way I can without stepping on toes!

Every custom in the database section comes with the possibility of adding comments like any forum thread, so that should be the natural place to notify them.
Unfortunately the website doesn’t enable automatic notifications by default so many authors probably don’t notice comments unless they manually check their past customs, and great authors have hundreds of them… I don’t know what to suggest in that case. Maybe we should collect all the errors that go unanswered and keep track of them in a specific forum thread.
Anyway I suggest to focus on actual bugs and obvious chart mistakes. Otherwise be aware that between ghost/unaudible notes, limitations of the RB controllers, and songs with multiple guitars/keys/etc. every authors also has to make choices you may disagree with, but aren’t really errors.
You can lower a custom’s volume (or even individual instruments if multitrack) by modifying the DTA file, but you cannot increase it. There are many things you can easily change for your own use in DTA, such as instruments difficulties, and it’s as easy as editing a text file, so it could be a first thing to learn.
Just DM authors if you go this route. I’d rather have that than being tagged in comments a hundred times. If they don’t respond, as many are not active anymore, then I’d MAYBE hit up the comments, but be respectful no matter what.
Just don’t fix errors and post as your own. Against the rules and generally bad etiquette.
Yeah, I have quite a few I have made tweaks to here and there or fixed tempo maps, etc… learned it’s better to keep to myself if original author doesn’t respond. Was considering starting a “minor tweaks” thread but not sure how it would go over.
Welcome to C3! I would agree with the PM route, you typically tend to get faster responses that way. Make sure all criticism is constructive!

Problem is this can easily snowball into a “you’re wrong for not charting it the way I want it to be”. Constructive criticism is excellent and helpful but a single thread for people to congregate and openly criticize other people’s work I don’t think would end up being very productive.

Exactly. Factual errors should be fixed, like lyrics mistakes or drum fills overlapping with the crash… I can’t imagine any author not wanting to fix them! Subjective changes can be discussed openly, but if customs worked like a wiki, they would lead to endless back-and-forth edits…

Yup I totally get that, which is basically why I have NOT done that
So, you’re basically saying I could fix the charts myself just using the file and the tools?
I would definitely take this route first and learn what I’m doing and offer the fixed chart if they are willing to take it.
I would never take somebody’s work and tweak it and call it my own. That’s disingenuous.
