Hey all – just wondering if anyone has used this guitar with RB/GH ?
I have an opportunity to pick one up for next to nothing so I think i will pick it up anyway but was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on it.
I know the reviews were pretty bad for the game overall but not sure if that applied to the actual guitar.
I am hoping to modify it somehow to add in a strum bar so that it would actually play like a RB/GH guitar.
I have always wanted to mod a real guitar to be able to use in RB so i thought this might be a good chance to do that – any thoughts ?
January 3, 2020 at 11:43 pm #508952The PowerGig guitar is pretty much as bad as the rest of the game. It’s all plastic, which means it’s horrendous to try and play as an actual guitar… not that PowerGig really tries to teach you how to play actual guitar.
The guitar may work as a 5-button guitar, but it will not work as a pro guitar, simply because RB3 is not programmed to recognize it as a game controller, and it does not have the MIDI port necessary to make it work with the MIDI Pro Adapter.

You would need tech on the fingerboard that could tell where your fretting fingers are, tech on the guitar body to tell what strings you have strummed, and tech to translate all these signals into either the proper MIDI events for the MIDI Pro Adapter, or the proper controller signals for a direct connection to the game console. Modding a MIDI-enabled electronic guitar would be easier, but would still require a bit of technical know-now and the right e-guitar to start with; not all MIDI guitars send signals when you’re pressing down on the fingerboard but not actually strumming. The You Rock Guitar was designed with RB3 support out of the box, but I haven’t heard about any other MIDI guitars being modded to work with the game.
Simply put, if you want to play a music game with a real guitar, you’ll probably want to look at RockSmith instead.

It actually does work as a 5 button guitar and is kinda neat to play that way as it recognizes where your fingers are on the fret board and strumming the strings is the same as using the strumbar.
I do have a real guitar and Rocksmith so i definitely wont be using this for any purpose other than RB3.
