Album art does not get added to the CON file

My latest issue is not a critical one but still I would like to know if I am overlooking something…
I have a jpg file with the album cover, and I have selected it in Magma by clicking on the appropriate area. Magma shows the preview and doesn’t throw any error, but after converting the output RBA to CON using C3 Tools, I try the song analyzer and it pops up a message that the PNG_XBOX file cannot be found.
Could it be that my album art file is not in appropriate format when giving it to Magma, or did I forget something else?
August 3, 2019 at 8:21 pm #506381I tried to start from a png file instead of jpg but no effect.
I also noticed that Magma only outputs an RBA file. I thought this was the norm but now I noticed it says it should output a CON but could not convert from RBA to CON. So there actually IS an error thrown by Magma, I didn’t notice it because it completed anyway (unlike when it finds errors in midi).
In addition, changing the album art target size doesn’t seem to matter: the default 512p is selected but as soon as I drag-and-drop any picture into Magma, it always generates a 256p bitmap file, and no png, unlike what is shown in Magma tutorial video.
Eventually the RBA can be converted to CON and then PS3 with C3 Tools and the custom works fine, but obviously there is no album art shown.
August 3, 2019 at 8:55 pm #506382Weird. What error is Magma throwing when it tries to convert to CON? For album art I usually drag and drop onto the album art area in Magma and it runs a format conversion on the spot.

Something went wrong converting your RBA to CON.
Please read above for any error messages.
Your RBA file is fine, try converting it with C3 CON Tools in the meantime.
Thanks for checking!
The log didn’t tell me much about the cause. I have the Magma executable under a C:MagmaC3 folder. I did wonder for a second if it was a folder permission problem or maybe an issue with spaces in the path, but the other files (including the bmp version of the cover image) are created to the target folder normally, it’s only the png file which isn’t there.
My best bet is that either I am doing something very dumb or overlooking some settings. Or could it be that I am missing some library in Windows which are required for the conversion? This would be a bit weird since I can convert from jpg to png for example in Paint, but it’s possible, considering I am working on an old laptop that still has Windows Vista (long story, but the WiFi will stop working if I change the OS, so I can’t update without giving up network access).
If for some reason I cannot get the problem fixed, is it possible to manually add the png file to the CON as long as it’s a 512×512 image, or does it need some special formatting that only Magma can provide?
August 4, 2019 at 9:43 am #506389I am wondering… does Magma depend on C3 CON Tools to do its job? Because there is a setting to choose the path to C3 CON Tools… I thought maybe a broken path could explain why Magma fails at converting RBA to CON, but I tried to manually set this path a few times and nothing happened (not sure if the fact that, when I click to change the path to C3 CON Tools, Magma always opens to its own folder instead of the last selected folder is a sign that it’s not finding the Tools executable).
I also tried the C3 CON Tools “Advanced Art Converter” to convert my jpg manually into png_xbox, and it FAILS! Same error if I try to convert to png_ps3, but oddly enough it does not fail if I try to convert to png_wii, but then there is no option to directly convert from png_wii to png_xbox, so I am back to square one
August 4, 2019 at 8:28 pm #506400They do not rely on each other. If they are interconnected you’ll get some buttons to click when the build is done to preview and what not. But it’s not necessary.
The fact that you are having the same issue with both programs tells you it’s a permissions error. Move them out of the C: root folder and put them in your desktop folder where apparently you keep your authoring stuff. Run the programs as administrator. Try again and see what happens.

Thanks! I will try this solution of moving Magma to the desktop tonight. It is currently under C:Magma subfolder, as I originally though it was enough not to have the exe directly under C: but maybe that’s not the case.
The C3 CON Tools however are already on a desktop folder, and the Advanced Art Converter” didn’t work either.
I tried Magma on a different PC and it worked perfectly, even if it is in a similar folder. So this is not a critical issue for me, in the worst case I’ll have to run my final build before release on the other PC just to get the cover art added to the CON. Everything else besides the cover and the automatic RBA->CON conversion (which I can do manually anyway) works just fine.
EDIT: for the record, moving Magma to the desktop didn’t help.
