Okay, so here’s my problem:
I know that you can use the very old RawkSD to get it working. However:
- This only works on the Wii, not Wii Mode on the Wii U (vWii).
- RawkSD 2 requires a patched IOS 37 and a System Menu downgrade to work.
- RawkSD 3 doesn’t require a patched IOS or downgrade, but the time on the Wii must be set to sometime before January 2012.
I am trying to get Rock Band 2 customs working on vWii. The process has been very hard. I’m sure I built the custom correctly, but RB2 doesn’t see it on my SD card. I built it just like I built RB3 customs using StackOverflow0x’s guide, making sure to use RB2 specific files (PANs, a RB2 DTA, BIK, etc.). It doesn’t even appear on the list! Other things I’ve tried:
- Patched IOS 37 – Anything that tries to use this hangs my Wii U.
- Injecting APPs to NAND – Error: There was an error indexing add-on content. Please visit the Music Store and re-download an item of add-on content.
If I need to access the Music Store, I’m sunk, since Nintendo WiFi Connection and the Wii Shop are both inactive. It kicks me out saying that there was an error communicating with Rock Band Central servers.
If anyone knows anything on customs for the Wii version of Rock Band 2, that would be AWESOME! ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />
EDIT: To be clear, I also want to know if a similar method will work for Wii, perhaps bypassing the need for the old RawkSD altogether.
July 30, 2019 at 9:38 am #506311Are you sure you are using a generation that is read by RB2?
To make sure everything is fine with the slot you’re using I would try loading a RB3 custom songs in that slot first, if RB3 reads it and you can play it and it is in fact a generation read by RB2 (I believe sZFE and older) a RB2 formatted song in that same slot should at least show up in RB2.
July 30, 2019 at 11:48 pm #506323AnonymousI am using sZAE. It doesn’t appear on vWii for RB2. Customs in the same generation work almost flawlessly for RB3, though; no problem there. I should also mention that I have followed this guide on custom IOSes. I tried to set IOS 248 to a patched IOS 37 on the Wii U, but everything that tries to use it freezes.
July 31, 2019 at 12:10 am #506324What I would do in this situation is making sure RB2 official DLC actually works, and go from there. I’ll send you a PM with a bit more info.

July 31, 2019 at 11:42 pm #506334AnonymousYesterday, I went through a series of problems. I unfortunately didn’t know that there is a significant difference between the IOS 37 in the Wii and the one in vWii. I replaced the one in vWii with one from the Wii, and now everything that requires it hangs the Wii U. I can’t seem to find the vWii IOS 37; the best I’ve come is Uwizard, but it doesn’t pack it into a WAD like I need.
I know that the RawkSD software for Rock Band 2 requires a patched IOS 37, but now my vWii is messed up because the right one is gone. How (and where) do I get it back? I want it back regardless of RawkSD so my vWii will work right. Also, is there some way to get RB2 customs working on vWii (or even Wii) without a patched IOS 37? I think RawkSD 3 was supposed to do this, but it’s the beta version, and that requires setting your clock back.
August 1, 2019 at 12:45 am #506335To be honest I don’t think you need any more IOS than the one that loads official DLC.
I think RawkSD required that IOS for the process it used, since it was meant to be a userfriendly thing through homebrew channel. The manual method we use for RB3 (and that you can most likely use for RB2) shouldn’t require more than what the official DLC requires. I even think custom songs are possible on an unmodded console using the right method, but of course there are other issues if you do that, especially on RB3 considering you can’t clear the cache without a modded console.
Unfortunately I have no idea where you can get the OG IOS for the vWii. Maybe look for a NAND dump from a freshly modded vWii? Would be some work but I think you can extract these from a NAND using ShowMiiWads (I think that’s the name?) and install them.

Which one is that? I’ve been using IOS 249 with base IOS 56, and it doesn’t work.

Even official DLC seems to not work right. I’m trying to figure out why the DLC isn’t even appearing.

I have a vWii emuNAND that I dumped with USB Loader GX before replacing IOS 37. Where would the IOS files be?
I started playing this game after the Wii Shop closed, so if I need to use the Music Store, then customs can’t be added unless a hack is applied to the Music Store.

1- I don’t know, that’s why I haven’t said any number, it’s been way too long in my memory.
2- As far as I understand, you would need to build it using ShowMiiWads. You should be able to see a list of IOS in the software and just extract the wad file from there. I don’t know if there’s a way to do it directly from the NAND files, I don’t think I would risk it considering how easy it is to fuck up the vWii apparently. If I remember correctly ShowMiiWads has 2 modes, one of them deals with NANDs, iirc it wasn’t that obvious when I used it (again, this has been years ago…).
If for some reason that method doesn’t work, I would then simply revert to that backup you did, probably the easiest way to revert any errors.
3- This shouldn’t matter. If it works even remotely similar to how RB3 works the music store is not in the equation. All you need for DLC/Customs to work is the correct tickets in the tik folder, and the correct files in the correct folder in the title folder, and of course, actual DLC in either the title folder or on your SD card. The wad files used to unlock slots should take care of anything you need for that generation, so if a RB2 gen works fine on RB3 but doesn’t work on RB2, it really is just a matter of loading the game using the right cIOS. I’ve tried to do some googling on the subject, and all I found was some post on GameFAQS from a dude who did a license transfer from his wii to WiiU and his RB2 DLC didn’t work. So really, I don’t know if that is a vWii limitation at this point. It may not be (and that would be really dumb that people who paid for them can’t use them anymore), but it also may be, there just isn’t enough information about RB2 on vWii since pretty much everyone moved on to RB3.
August 5, 2019 at 3:05 am #506407AnonymousSome further things I have attempted over the past few days:
Note that IOS 250 with base 57 and IOS 251 with base 58 do not allow the instruments to connect, so all this has been done with IOS 249 with base 56.
- Adding meta and song APP files to the NAND: Does not appear.
- Adding meta, song, and TMD to the NAND: Error indexing content.
- Adding meta, song, TMD, and banner APP to the NAND: Error indexing content.
- Adding meta, song, and banner APPs to the NAND: Does not appear.
- Adding meta and song BINs to the SD card: Add-on content is corrupt.
- Adding meta, song, and 000.bin to the SD card: Add-on content is corrupt.
Strangely, if I use a 2GB card, it can not read it, but if I use my 8GB SDHC, it finds it, but tells me that my songs are corrupt. USB Loader GX refuses to work with a custom IOS that does not have the d2x patch applied, and the d2x cIOS Installer I have for vWii gives me these options:
- For the d2x v10 beta (52 or 53 alt), I can only patch a cIOS with base IOS 56, 57, and 58.
- For d2x v3 through v6, if I want to patch a cIOS using IOS 37, I need to have v5662. The vWii version is v5919, so this will not work. Usually I set it to 248, and all programs that attempt to load it hang.
What should I use?
August 14, 2019 at 12:08 am #506575AnonymousI’ve managed to recover IOS 36. No, you’re reading right – I assumed IOS 37 was corrupt, but when I previewed the IOS files with Yet Another BlueDump Mod, IOS 37’s version was correct, but IOS 36 was version 0, which meant it was empty. I found out that the IOS files are in NAND:/title/00000001. I copied the files for folder 00000024 from my emuNAND to the real vWii NAND, and now IOS 36 shows the correct version number. To be safe, I backed it up as a WAD with YABDM in the event I lose/overwrite the emuNAND copy.
Still, I’m back to where I started from. Rock Band 2 is difficult to hack, it seems.
September 2, 2019 at 7:35 pm #506949AnonymousAfter a few more tests, it appears that RB2 is corrupted somehow. I completely cleaned an SDHC card, put it in the Wii U, started RB2 through any USB Loader, and it says “Add-on content on the SD card is corrupt”. I load it normally through the Disc Channel, and it hangs at a black screen. How do I fix this?
April 20, 2020 at 12:38 am #510913AnonymousAfter seven months hiatus, I’ve been doing some more tests on trying to get RB2 customs working. Using a new emuNAND method I discovered (see this post on GBAtemp), I’ve been able to get TB:RB customs working just fine. However, RB2 hangs at Loading… whenever I start up the game using the emuNAND. It works fine with NAND emulation turned off, but then it tells me the same error I always get – the “Add-On Content is corrupt” error.
I don’t know why it has trouble loading, sometimes, when I make modifications to my vWii. I haven’t had other games do that, including RB3. If I did the DLC wrong, or the method I chose is buggy, RB3 can freeze to where I have to unplug, but sometimes RB2 doesn’t even start up; in other words, the black screen stays when I run the disc, and it never shows the “how to use the Wii remote” notification, meaning the game is hung. Weird!
That’s the status right now. I feel like I’m closer to getting it to work than ever before! I hope someone else is also trying to get it working, because this is a bit frustrating.
