Free software for using the RB keyboard on PC?

My kids are interested in using the RB keyboard outside the game, so I am going to buy a midi-usb adapter to connect it to a Windows 10 laptop.
Then I guess we need some software with a decent set of sound samples for them to play with
” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif” /> At least for the time being I am looking for freeware, demos or feature-limited (but not time-limited) trials, since it’s very possible they won’t stick with the idea longer than a couple of days… It doesn’t need to have any serious functionalities, however it would be important for them to be at least able to save their little compositions. Therefore no-save trials options like FL Studio are not good (not sure but it says you can save but not reopen).
One promising option I’ve found is Pro Tools First. I am not totally sure if the free (“First”) version supports recording from midi keyboard though.
What would you recommend?
REAPER has some decent synths and things to play around with, they’re adjustable and presets can be made out of them. REAPER also has MIDI keyboard support and you could download some free VSTs for them to use. I’m not sure what the free Pro Tools trial is like, but I know REAPER actually has full functionality with the free version and they give you a 60 day(?) evaluation period.

I’ve used Synthesia to actually learn to play (and how I was able to create any sort of legible keyboard chart).
They have a free version, I’m just unsure of the limitations or what you can do with it. But it might be worth checking out.
