Ben E. King – Stand by Me

    QKPAJFY.jpg
Converted from Karaoke Revolution. Not having to do vocals was a godsend, although the harmonies gave me some trouble.

    INSTRUMENT BREAKDOWN

Guitar: It’s the same slow, easy riff the entire song.

Bass: Same as guitar, only it starts earlier.

Drums: Since there isn’t any real drum part, I authored percussion instead. There aren’t any red or orange notes, and even on pro, the only cymbal is a single blue note at the end of the pattern.

Vocals: Lots of really quick jumps. Harmonies are easy, though: just sustained notes, and they only come in halfway through the song.

Keys: Most of the time, you’re playing the same riff as the guitar and bass. There’s a pretty tricky chord in measure 50 (for pro), and the solo requires a lot of quick hand movement.

Biz Markie – Just a Friend

Authored at MissingElements’s request. It was a lot of fun to do… well, except for the dry vox.

UPDATE 10/14/2016: Added some drum notes I missed the first time.

    INSTRUMENT BREAKDOWN

Drums: A pretty standard 4/4 beat. Nothing really challenging here.

Vocals: The verses are rapping, and the choruses are pretty slow. The only hard part is the final “a friend” in each chorus, which is slightly higher-pitched than the other ones.

Keys: It’s the same 5 or so chords for the entire song… but they’re really awkward to play.

    Yuki Iwai – Chill Penguin

One of my authoring pipe dreams is to do every Maverick theme from X1-X8. Here’s one of them.

    INSTRUMENT BREAKDOWN

Guitar: A lot of movement, but nothing too hard… outside the HOPO nightmare at the beginning. And the end of both “verses”.

Bass: Same as guitar, but with some tricky jumps in the second half of each verse.

Drums: Mostly kick/snare with the occasional fill. There’s some fast kicking in the second half of each verse, though.

Keys: Just sustains outside Intro B, which has some nasty jumps, followed by the same quick little riff that the guitar’s playing.

    Halloween ’16 Special:

Insane Clown Posse – Hokus Pokus

    FJFGH9d.jpg

Yeah, yeah, I know. They’re a guilty pleasure, OK?

    INSTRUMENT BREAKDOWN

Guitar: There’s not much of it, and it’s slow when it’s there. The only remotely hard part is the rapid strumming at the end of the solos.

Bass: Only one riff. It’s all over the fretboard, but it’s pretty slow.

Drums: Surprisingly tricky. There’s some pretty rapid kicks in the verses, and the pattern 3/4ths of the way through the verse can trip you up too.

Vocals: Just rapping in the verses, and only two (three for the female chorus) notes outside them.

Keys: Slow and easy. I didn’t chart any of the stuff in the intro because I could barely hear it, so it wouldn’t have been fun to play anyway.

    Baltimora – Tarzan Boy

    zFdkiyX.jpg

This was the custom that taught me to use Reaper (I’d already learned the basics of authoring back when everyone did it in FeedBack and posted it on Scorehero). Unsurprisingly, it took me a while- like, I had to redo the tempo map 3 times- but it’s finally here.

    INSTRUMENT BREAKDOWN

Guitar: Power chords in the chorus, nasty chord changes in the verses, and a tricky breakdown at the end of each bridge.

Bass: 8ths in the chorus, rapid strumming in the verses, and the same breakdown as the guitar and keys.

Drums: Just a standard four-on-the-floor beat with the occasional fill thrown in.

Vocals: Fast and full of jumps. I suck at hearing harmonies so there might be more than two vocal parts in the chorus.

Keys: You play along with the vocals during the chorus, sustains and a short quick part in the verses, and the usual breakdown in the bridges.

    The Bags – Cavemen Rejoice

Whenever I get author’s block, I like to work on converting GH1 bonus songs. They’ve got the tempo mapping done, they have partial multitracks, and I get to bask in high school nostalgia.

That being said, here’s Cavemen Rejoice, one of my favorite bonus songs from 1.

    INSTRUMENT BREAKDOWN

Guitar: Mostly power chords, but the solo has some tricky parts, and there’s some quick HOPOs in the last chorus.

Bass: Lot of HOPOs, but nothing too challenging.

    Drums: Another basic four-on-the-floor beat.

Vocals: Not too fast, not many pitches… it shouldn’t give you much trouble.

Three awesome choices and completely different genres from each other.

Tarzan Boy and Cavemen Rejoice are up! (And Hokus Pokus’s been up.)

I’m gonna work on a couple December specials (an infamous rap-metal tune about police brutality, and an AQAP love song from a fictional idol group), then probably do Mosquito Song.

Hmm, sounds familiar. Cop Killer by Body Count, maybe?

One of the community managers and the main tournament organizer over at SpinShare. Also somewhat decent at charting for RB3 I think.
