I’ve run into a bit of a rut lately with RB. I mostly play RB3 on my 360, and occasionally I’ll hop onto RB4 on the Xbox One (with the adapter… don’t have any of the RB4 instruments at the moment, but have been eyeballing the new guitar that’s going to be coming out with the new Rivals thing)… but I much prefer the feel of RB3, and prefer the extensive song selection on there versus the much smaller selection on RB4. Even without the customs, my song list on RB3 is much larger than it is on RB4, even after importing any/all songs I could into RB4. So far the DLC that’s come out for RB4 hasn’t really done much for me, so as I said, I stick mostly to RB3 at the moment. Aaaanyways, onto the point of this discussion. My rut with RB is this: I never used to think that I cared much about the leaderboards, about comparing my scores and whatnot to other players, or about trying to be in the top #5, or top #10, or top anything. But lately I’ve been finding that…. I just don’t seem to have any drive to play. I mean, I do LOVE to play RB, and I’ll fire up the 360, start playing, and then I find myself wondering… why am I playing? And maybe that’s a really, really silly question to ask myself. The answer should be obvious – for my enjoyment, for fun, for…whatever! And those are all answers that I have to that question, however…. it feels like there’s no goals to try and reach, nothing to work towards, I suppose. I guess maybe I cared about the leaderboards and scores more than I thought I did, I don’t know.

To get to the title of this discussion… A while back I hopped onto RB4, and used Twitch to stream my playing for a friend of mine who also loves RB (but hasn’t had the opportunity to see me play in person unfortunately), and I had so much fun with this. I absolutely loved the whole streaming thing, and for the first time in quite some time, I didn’t feel like there was this internal battle going on in my head about wanting to play, but not feeling the drive to actually play, and feeling conflicted about the playing, etc. I was telling my friend that I wanted to be able to stream my RB3 as well, and he mentioned this thing… a capture card. I’d never heard of them before (I live under a rock, lol) and tried looking them up online a bit, but have no clue what it is I’m looking at with this stuff. Soooo…

Does anyone have any experience with using capture cards on a 360 to stream RB? Can anyone give any input or opinions, either about streaming RB on a 360, or just about capture cards in general and what makes a good or bad quality capture card, and what kind of prices I’d be looking at for a good one, etc.. Any input, advice, or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      *UPDATE: 9/23/16*

So, I dunno if this is the best way to do this, or if I should’ve just left a comment at the bottom of the threat or something, but… I wanted to thank everyone for their input, opinions, advice, etc. about the whole capture card and streaming thing. I ended up ordering a capture card about a week ago, and got it a few days ago. Have been toying with it and streaming a bit, just to get a feel for it and see how everything works and all that.

I ended up going with the Elgato HD60, and I have to say… I am very, very impressed. The picture quality of the stream is awesome… perfect in my eyes. But I don’t really have much to compare it to, since I don’t really watch a lot of streams or videos and such on Twitch. Lol.

So thank you again for all your help!! This streaming thing and doing this, even though I never have any viewers at all while I’m streaming (which I’ve been doing anytime I’m playing RB, just to kinda get used to it and fiddle with it and all that….lol), it’s still been fun because it’s kind of forced me to deviate from my normal mode of playing, which all in all, is actually helping me to be a better RB bass player, and is helping me to get better…. Which has kind of always been my ultimate goal. Lol.

So…. Again, thank you everyone The input I got from you guys on here really did help out tremendously and was definitely a contributing factor in my overall decision on which capture card to go with.

Oh, and…if any of you guys go on Twitch, or watch stuff on there, or stream on there, or just in general want to see someone with mediocre skills playing Expert Bass…. http://www.twitch.tv/cortthebort :)

It depends on the quality you want your captures to be. For higher-end, I’d recommend Hauppauge and Elgato capture systems. If you’re looking for something a little on the cheaper end, I’ve had good experience with Diamond’s video and game capture devices. If you’re wanting the higher end some good signs (other than higher price) is 30-60 fps, component or HDMI support, video passthrough (which eliminates lag if you’re playing on your computer monitor through the recorder rather than the monitor or TV the game is connected to), and potential software that lets you stream. As with most products you get what you pay for and a good capture system will run from $150-200. It’s pricey but if you plan on streaming frequently I’d recommend the higher-end.

As far as streaming goes, I think you can rig it so OBS can record from the capture screen that the game capture devices project on the computer and stream to Twitch, the only problem being a slight delay between vocal input and the game itself but if you don’t plan on recording your voice while playing RB3 it won’t be a problem. Some game capture systems (like this one) also either have software or built-in functions to stream to Twitch directly. If you ever decide to stream Rock Band 4 I believe the Xbox One has Twitch streaming available in the console itself.

Thanks for your input BansheeFlyer. My friend had also mentioned the brand Elgato, but only because he said he had a friend who had one of those and that he really liked it.

I did stream on my Xbox One using Twitch, which is what got me interested in possibly getting a capture card to use on my 360. I wish streaming was as easy on the 360 as it is on the Xbox One. However, I hate how streaming on Twitch on the Xbox One makes the screen smaller and whatnot while doing it….That made it a bit frustrating to play RB4, especially when I already dislike the feel and look of RB4.

When you say potential software that lets you stream…. what do you mean by that? Different capture cards have different streaming software? Which software is better, or more user-friendly and whatnot? Is there any software I should avoid or anything?

          Thanks again for your help.

I’m not exactly sure how it works as I haven’t explored it myself but some of the capture devices like the one I linked above have a program that’s either built-in or comes on a disc with the product that’ll allow you to stream to Twitch.

Perhaps someone who has actually successfully streamed with one can chime in?

I have an El Gato 60 fps and I use the El Gato sofeware to stream. I’ve tried OBS, but my computer started to overwork itself. If you decide to get an El Gato and you have a lower end pc, use the software that is offered on the El Gato website.

Could you possibly link me to the one you’ve got? How much was it? How easy is it to get everything set up and get started with streaming using a capture card? I’ve got a laptop as well as a desktop and they’re both higher end, so either one should be able to handle the work. Lol.

This is the one I have : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MIQ40JQ/ref=twister_B00NTQ2JL0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Its about $150 on Amazon although I got mine for a steal on Craigslist. I only paid $70! And yes, it is extremely easy to use. Just download the program, plug in the El Gato to the console, TV, and computer, tweak some picture settings (720p, 1080p, etc.) and link your twitch account.

Thank you very much! I actually have a $50 Amazon gift card that I’ve been itching to spend, and a capture card has been high on my list of things that I was thinking of putting it towards… So maybe I’ll do that. Thanks for your input.

IF you can afford it, get the Elgato HD60 – It’s a small device that you just plug the HDMI Cable from your 360 into, a USB cable into your PC and then a HDMI cable from the device into your TV.

After that it’s basically ready to go, you can just use the Elgato software if you want to do a basic stream

Thank you guys for all of your help with this!! I’ve actually just recently sort of… acquired a bit of extra cash, so maybe this is what I’ll put some of that cash towards. :D Thanks again for all the input and advice and whatnot! And if anyone else has any advice/opinions/input they’d like to share, feel free! If/when I do end up getting a capture card, I’ll let you guys know which one I went with.
