Hi, hoping someone can help troubleshoot this issue. I bought one of these XLR Female to USB Male cables to connect to my new Behringer XM8500 Dynamic Vocal Microphone. The adapter and mic are detected by windows, and works. But in RB3 there is no noise level indicator and it doesn’t work. the light on the cable is on, but nothing else. I bought the XM8500 as it said it didn’t require phantom power.

I don’t mind if I have to hack open the dongle to investigate or fix.

    Any ideas?

    Hi,

After a quick search about your problem I found a couple of interesting links.

Here is one on the HMX forums about using a mic with Rock Band. After looking at the cable people prefered in that thread compared to the one you have chosen, it looks like your one might not quite fit the bill (not good enough quality), or it might possibly be faulty.

Since XLR mics are a little more complicated than the standard USB mics (or any 3.5mm plug mics), it appears that the price you pay matters more, as it’s not a simple cable type conversion.

While I can understand your not wanting to spend a small fortune on a cable conversion, I would recommend returning the one you have for a refund, and buying from somewhere a little more reputable – Amazon is good if you choose the right sellers, and obviously pay attention to reviews.

While you could try fixing it yourself it’s quite possible the cable works fine and is in fact just not fit for this purpose, so I would recommend returning it and trying a different model cable from a different seller.

On a side note, while I’m sure XLR mics have many benefits over standard USB mics, especially the Rock Band one, I find keeping things simple is better, so I just use a modified SingStar mic, which I have found to be of better build quality than the Rock Band one.

If you had a spare Rockband USB mic you didn’t want to use and a mic with a 3.5mm plug, then you can very easily fashion (soldering required) an adapter to connect to Xbox 360. Plus, the total wire length is that of the Rock Band USB mic and the 3.5mm plug mic together; mine reaches more than four meters.

Here is another link with a cable very similar to the one you purchased. It looks like it has some very poor reviews due to it’s unreliability and some users found their cables were broken upon arrival. Maybe this is the case for your one too.
