Ok instruments have their own difficulty levels, that’s clear.
But what does the BAND difficulty level represent?
Simple question, hoping for a simple and concise answer TN….
In Rock Band 2, the band difficulty tier used to be visible alongside instrument difficulties. Now it only shows up in game when you sort songs by difficulty in and there are two or more instruments being used. The songs are then sorted by band difficulty.
It’s supposed to represent how difficult the song is to play with all instruments active. So if there are multiple instruments with high tiers, the band difficulty will most likely be highly tiered as well. If there is only a single instrument that is highly tiered, it may not impact the band tier as much since other players can help the player on that instrument with overdrive and by saving him/her.
In practice, it is usually determined by taking the average value of the instrument difficulty levels, with minor variations such as the one listed above.

There are a few exceptions to this, at least when it comes to full-band devil tiered listings. For example, a lot of death metal stuff will be labelled devils for full band, even if the vocals are 0 dots, due to the difficulty of the other instruments. There’s also songs with instrument parts so hard that they bump the full-band tier to devils (for HMX examples, see “This Is Exile” for drums and “Satch Boogie” for guitar).
