Why would you use an ekit to author?

As far as hardware goes, all you need is your computer. And maybe a mouse and monitor.

It would be a lot easier for me if i could just hook the set and start playing.

I don’t understand. Are you meaning to help chart?

In that case it’s going to be a matter of making REAPER aware of your drums, recording a MIDI track as you play your drums, and then molding that MIDI track into a proper game chart.

For the typical MIDI instrument, a MIDI interface will allow you to connect that instrument to your computer. Nowadays the best interfaces are USB-based, like this one. They’re relatively easy to use, especially on modern operating systems like Windows 7, and getting REAPER to recognize and talk to a MIDI instrument is also not too difficult. There may not be many people here with a lot of experience using MIDI instruments with REAPER, however, so really the REAPER forum would be a better place to ask. Once you have your drums connected and some recorded MIDI tracks to work with, we can help you here on making the track work with RB3, if you need.

Note that some e-kits, including the current series of DTX kits, have USB ports. With these you don’t need a MIDI interface at all. Just plug the e-kit directly into your computer. However, my understanding is different e-kits have different ways of presenting themselves through a direct USB connection, so getting REAPER to work with a USB-connected instrument may require some different voodoo than with “regular” MIDI instruments. Here again I would say the REAPER forum is the better place to ask for help.
