    Hey there.

I know there is another post on this that got bumped but I have been searching around the internet and haven’t found any real guides on how to do so. In this other post I got an idea of what is going on under the hood but I would like trying to get it to work practically.

I have the MIDI charts of the trainers from RB3 but I can’t get them to work even after putting the notes in the correct region and giving them the correct velocities. I think my problem lies in the channels as I don’t know which channel means which type. I mean I have been able to find a list but I don’t know enough about guitars to be able to see which notes go to what channel.

Does anyone know of a guide/video/something where I can actually see/read on which channels provide which in-game notes?

    Thanks in advance! <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

It may be helpful to author a quick pro guitar chart in EOF or Ziggy’s pro guitar editor to see what the resulting MIDI looks like in Reaper. Pro guitar and real keys authoring is a pretty complicated place to start if you’re not already very familiar with authoring in a MIDI editor.

The most important channels are 1 for standard notes, and 4 for muted notes. Muted notes display in game as blue notes with Xs on them. If you’re not comfortable using channels, author everything as channel 1 and come back and change channels after you’ve tested the part.

What do you mean when you say you can’t get it to work? Are you working on a custom or a pro guitar upgrade for an official song?

I’m just messing around with the RB3 Pro Guitar Trainers. I got the MIDI files so that I could look at the charts to get a better understanding of how it works but the channels and velocities doesn’t match up with what I have read online about pro guitar charting but I can see that the midi notes do match with what is on the original track in-game. I’m just trying to get into this charting stuff and I kinda got an idea on how charting for guitar, keys, drums etc. work so I’m just messing around with it and poking at it with a stick atm in order to learn about it.

Do you mean the pro guitar lessons from the RB3 career? Yeah don’t learn from those, I think they work a little differently from the standard note charts you’d find in a custom track or a pro guitar upgrade.

Here is the project files for a song I authored the pro guitar for. I also put the pro guitar note names in there in case you didn’t have it.

The project should look like it does on my computer.
The velocities of the notes should appear on the notes, and not the note names.
I’ve set the notes to be coloured by their channel instead of their pitch, channel 1 notes should be dark red and channel 4 notes should be blue.

These are all options you can set in your reaper projects, Color should be a drop down from the bottom of the midi edit window, and should be set to channel for pro guitar.
Show Velocity numbers for notes is an option from the view menu in the midi edit window.

You should find that a note with a velocity of 100 refers to an open note, and that a note with a velocity of 101 refers to a note at fret 1 etc.

You can check out the finished custom here, if you want to see how it looks in game.
