6/8 BEAT track

    Hello everyone!

     

    I’m working on a chart of All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me) by Bullet for My Valentine, and the song is at 94 BPM, and switching between 6/8 and 4/4 time. For the BEAT track, should I have the 6/8 parts be charted as a downbeat followed by five upbeats, all eighth notes, or should I do it as if it were 3/4 time? Does it even matter? Thanks for listening to my most likely stupid question!

      Check animations in game to see the result, it will probably be jerky having eighth notes.

        I’ve only worked with one 6/8 song so far, and I authored the beat track as if it were 3/4. The resulting track seemed to play well enough. Farottone gives good advice, though. Check in-game and see what looks best.

        Thanks, guys. I don’t actually have the Xbox 360 version of RB3, so I can’t easily check in-game, but I’m sure I can find some playtesters to check that it looks right. I’ll author it 3/4 to make sure the animations don’t screw up. Better safe than sorry.

          If it’s in 6/8, you should have a downbeat on 1 and an upbeat on 4, but treating it as 3/4 can also work.

          6/8 = 3/4. It’s the same thing.

           

          I deal with alot of non x/4 stuff, I usually only put notes on the beat itself, so if my bar was 11/16 for example I’d use 3 markers. It works for me.

            That’s true in the analog world, but not in the confines of RB3 and MIDI. 6/8 will probably result in herkyjerky animations, as Farottone said. If the BPM is fast enough, you’d have to use a 1/128 grid for authoring vocals in 6/8, since 1/64 would be too sloppy.

            Aren’t animations determined by the Beat track? so 3/4 or 6/8 shouldn’t make a difference, what should is either 3 or 6 markers.

              Yes, and that is exactly the difference you have for those 2. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”> In a 3/4 time, you have 3 beats (one on beat, 2 off beats); in 6/8 you have 6 beats (2 on beats, 4 off beats). If you try 6/8 as 3/4 in the BEAT track by only placing a donwbeat on the first on beat and only 2 of the 4 off beats, you’re good to go. If not, you run the risk of having your characters seize a bit on screen.
