Sorry for the clickbait title, but it’s true.

I feel like I’m constantly telling people about this, so I thought I’d start a thread for it. If you’re having trouble hearing anything at all because it’s too far in the back of the mix, open up the FX chain on your audio, add “JS: Center Canceler” to the top of the chain (or anywhere really), and turn it up to 100%. This takes anything that’s not panned left or right to be removed from the audio. So generally what you’re going to be left with are:

      Keys

      Backing vocals

      Toms

(Quieter) drums with almost no snare and definitely no kick

This isn’t a guarantee, but mixing standards tend to make it so this is the case.

And if you’re having trouble hearing the bass, use ReaPitch to raise everything up an octave. Bass comes right out. Hell, do this even if you have stems. It helps clear everything up.

Also I’ve found that using equalizer to silence any frequencies above 100 – 200 leaves you with just the bass and kicks, which can make charting those a lot easier. Also, any time I get stuck while doing a fast drums part, I put the playback speed to 50%, and it really helps.

I only do this in dire circumstances. It makes things really muddy and hard to make out. Leaving only high frequencies can be good for cymbals, though.

I do this with every part of every sing. If you’re not constantly fiddling with the playback slider, you’re charting wrong as far as I’m concerned.

One of my approaches is to use ReaPitch and shift it up an octave while at the same time playing back the song at 50% speed.  The result is that notes sound more or less the same while being played back at half the speed.

Better yet, REAPER will let you do that natively: right-click the Rate control and select ‘Preserve pitch’.

It pays to right-click on everything.  Awesome tip!

…That’s weird. I can’t seem to find that plugin on my FX list?

                Why could that be?

Really need this, would be very helpful considering I have some issues authoring backing vocals  :v:

Search it. There is another word that I can’t remember in front of it. That’s what I did.

                  It’s JS: LOSER/center canceler

Not sure if i’m saying this right, but JS: Center Canceler makes the vocals more dry on a vocal track.

Honestly I have no idea. You’re missing a TON of plugins that I have. Maybe it was part of the RBN installation?

Either way, there’s a DIY way to do it. Do this:

                    1. Duplicate the audio track, so you have two running simultaneously against each other
                    2. Right click one of them, go to Item Settings > Take channel mode: Mono (left)
                    3. Repeat step two on the other, except (right) instead of left (Do NOT pan either of these tracks in any direction)
                    4. Invert the phase on one of the tracks. Do this by clicking a button near the FX button with a Ø symbol

It won’t work QUITE as well, since the plugin adds some extra magic, but this is basically what the plugin does anyway. That’ll do for you what needs to be done.

Yeah that’s what I found it under, for others who can’t seem to find it.

And wow, is it a dramatic change! I wonder if I should go back and look at all my customs with this but … SOOO much more work <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_frown.gif” />

This is a great thread.  I slowed the rate down to .25, turned on “JS: Center Canceler”, and now the chromatic tuner detects 4 distinct pitches when Steve Winwood sings the single word “fire” in the first verse of “Gimme Some Lovin'”.  This is…interesting.

Few people sing in pure sine waves. Welcome to timbre.

I was told there would be no math.
